I can't see how this is going to bring players in. Existing  players are going to eat new players alive far longer than it will take new players up to speed enough to compete.

Even average players will eat the new guys alive. Where is this player base that ypu can pull new players in from? Certainly not war thunder. The others have there own hard core players, more interested in engine cooling and start up procedures than fighting.

Even if you should bring in a ton of new players for the tournament's, will they both moving over to the Melee arena where the game needs the most help?

I hope your right and it all works out, I just don't see it.
Maybe existing players won’t be allowe to participate.

If the money prize tournament brings in new players and the competition is fair and well managed. They will talk about it with other gamers which will have the usual outcome of people wanting to take a look at it. During all of that take a looking and new people taking part, the MA and free content is right there for them to keep taking a look.

With money at stake, I would be much more worried about how to create an environment as close to everyone being in the same room and on the same network with the same PC's. Personally I wouldn't bet a dime on this unless it was hosted in a room where all of the participants had to show up at that location to play on hardware and a network supplied by HTC. Since the film viewer pulls a lot more info than we can look at but, Skuzzy and Hitech can, I hope contestants are required to submit and AHF film of every match before any prizes are handed out. An AVI conversion hides a lot of things.

Very strange how most seem to think this aimed at existing customers.

HiTech

I agree with Fugitive. This has the potential to be a great idea, and it might provide and element of the game that seems "new and hip" to the current demographic of gamers. Especially considering how ESport type games have blown up in size considerably. But.... you had mentioned how it is tough to "set the hook"  on new players. They are still going to come into a game that has a pretty steep learning curve (which i think is the best part, but i digress), and then they see they need to pay a 15 dollar subscription before they have really even learned what to do. Is this new tournament aspect going to be that hook?

Hey im all for anything that is going to bring in new players. So I really hope this works. I believe the idea is there. I just dont understand yet how this will keep new players in the game. Maybe I don't see the big picture though.

As far as the new cats and the seal clubbing that will most likely happen. It would be nice to have an indicator (visual) that shows who is playing in the trial period and who is not in the trial period but has less than two months of experience.

I also look at it from a gladiatorial perspective. Squads should get their pilots up in the air and train for tourneys and the squad leader guys send their best couple of sticks to compete.

This could bring new people to squad play and help them become more competitive not only for tourneys but in every other area of the game.

There are so many ways to make this extremely positive that it kind of shuts out the negative opinions that are expressed in this thread.

Sure there will be growing pains, there always are but it is what it is.

Why is that? I personally love the idea. As long we can all behave and not be to salty about our losses. It also gives me a change to fight the illusive joachim and friends which will make me a better pilot in return even when i do not win.

You answered your own question.  That's probably not the reason HTC hasn't moved on it, but it's a good reason.

The amount of grief if people lost real money, people losing a base is drama enough.

Playing for money, get a job

JockyM is never online so why bring it up?

I play tournaments in starcraft 2 sometimes I win but mostly loose. for me the level of competition is the only reason why I play that game. It gets me exited an motivated me to get better. For me that is fun in gaming.

If it where implemented in would enjoy it.

Edit: because it's his treat
