New players are coming in in droves.   By the thousands.   But they’re not staying past five mins.    This is the riddle that needs to be solved.

there is a small problem, many a time I welcome the new players to the game. welcome to AH3 and the knights if you need any help just ask-some don't ask or some will ask but won't answer you when you ask a question-or just simply say this game is stupid-which I take as code for this game is too hard. I don't know but I do try to help-but can't help if not wanted.

Why HTC has not required new players to complete a boot camp is beyond me.  I'm guessing it doesn't happen now because it would be to expensive to develop a proper boot camp to train new players.  So new people jump in, get frustrated and leave in under 10 minutes, never to return.

Id love to see an active tutorial, complete "this", then "that", move on to "this", and a bit of "that", THEN you get unlimited time in the MA with a very limited plane set. No stress, to "must hurry to learn to get kills", all the time in the world to explore, train, LEARN, then subscribe. I think most new players give it a try and see its going to take some time to figure this out/learn the game and so just log off never to return. If they have the free option that never runs out they may stick around longer trying to work it all out. This also give old time players long to spot these new players and help them out.

The 1st time noob has no clue how to get started. MS Flight Simulator (and War Thunder) have missions that walk you thru the basics. AH3 needs the same, along with rewards (read:perks) that accumulate with the number of missions completed. (This should all happen on the free side of the game)

I just read the other posts above suggesting similar ideas to mine. Glad to know others identify the problem that causes so many new folks to leave. I recall the first time I came into the game in 2001. I lasted 20 minutes before leaving...totally frustrated. Upon the recommendation of a fellow Air Warrior, I came back and by luck found the text chat and came across a player named Ghosth...a trainer...who helped with joystick assignments and got me into the air.

Many new players don't know how to use text or vox yet, so even if they want to accept offers for help they don't know how.

Text and vox use should be one of the first things in a tutorial.

When you first start the game, there is a video tutorial for each action that you take.  That's a good start in the right direction.  I just guess that many new players are skipping the tutorial.

I think the way DCS does their intro stuff is pretty good.  The nice thing about AH is things are a lot simpler than DCS so it would take less time.

I think the larger problem with it is, of those thousands of people not many are logging in looking for a hobby they're looking for a game they can pick up and put down.  Between pretty much needing hardware and not being free, that's an enormous barrier to new players.

Many of you know that POTW returned to the knights July 1, we have been rook for the last 18 months. So I have some impressions about the personnel makeup of our three countries.

I can't help noticing in both the nit and rook camps a large number of gentlemen probably 40ish to 60's. By that age range men are cognizant of investing their time and efforts even if it's to have fun. It is a life style habit by that age that effects everything they do. This makes for a hair pulling reality that even with numbers, you can't find a tipping point that inspires them to pull together for initiatives. Probably a collateral reason for no missions these days. What POTW knows and is obvious to us, every Tuesday night is squad night. POTW feilds up to 16 on that night. Knights or rooks, when we went and broke an enemy field picking a fight, eventually we got a hoard of green guys following in to clean up after the heavy lifting was done.

For those two countries at least, one tipping point is seeing numbers "doing something". Then they all show up for the fun. In AH2 this was hidden by the fact of 400-600 players, so there were mega squads doing something all the time. It seems simple, get a group to do something then everyone shows up becasue of the benefits of numbers. Other wise you look at a map with say 50 rook or knight, and single dar blocks everywhere, tank icons trying to sneak into a lone field, and a few fighters here and there. But, nothing going on. To make something going on someone has to take it on the chin to start it, and keep taking it on the chin to keep it going. That was the biggest benefit of squads in the past. Furballers don't generate enough activity spectrum to attract anyone but furballers unless it is a GV to greif them by stealing their home base.

The bish have impressed me that most of our under 40 players live there. And they operate as one unit for the most part, not like nit and rook scattering themselves too much out of boredom or not feeling the tactical situation will make them feel good. There have been times in the last 18 months that I wonder if all of the bish players are logged into the same Discord server so they can call in hoards at will from other games when a juicy setup appears in nit or rook territory. They hoard very well which both nit and rook detest and often get beaten by. Once you up from another field and run a large fighter seep into those bish, they scatter. Fortunately for them that does not happen much anymore. Too much effort I guess unless it's Tuesday and POTW wants to stomp on someone.
