There seems to be a lot of updates for VR.

How many people have it and is it worth buying.

Been looking around and headsets are not cheap.
There are no pies stored in this plane overnight

If you don't mind the lower resolution compared to current monitors, it's worth it. Nobody likes the lower resolution but being "inside" the game generally makes up for it. Higher resolution will mean lower performance until PC's get a lot faster.

Smooth tracking is the most important VR feature and I believe the Rift is still the best choice for flight sims.

If you use it for a few years the cost/benefit is pretty good.

Hitech posted a graph of "players using VR" for 7-10 days. He cut off the player number scale so we dont "know" how many are using it, but due to the way the graph line was jumping around day to day, and the fact that Hitech cut the the player axis off it cant be many. Id guess that its under 20% and I think that is being generous.

VR is the next biggest thing. Its ok now, but in the next year or two it will most likely explode. The resolution and the price are the hurdles right now. Drop your resolution down to 800X600 and you'll get an idea of what it looks like. On the other hand the immersion even at that crappy resolution is said to be unbelievable.

Price wise, even now you can find deals on Facebook market place and Ebay for lightly used equipment. With the Christmas sales going on I can find new units for $350, $50 cheaper than last week. Used ones you can find for under $200.

What bothers me is this is the only game I play. Id hate to blow $400 on VR and have the game go in a dirrection I dont care for, or just close up and Im stuck with a $400 paper weight.

My first VR headsets were in the $2k range.

I have an Oculus Rift and absolutely love the feeling of immersion.  AH3 is the only game I play, and I really only fly fighters, and occasionally man a gun or fly a buff.  Downsides are loss of resolution, and some aspects of SA (mostly due to smaller field of view), and it's a pain to use the keyboard.  But the feeling of actually being in the plane is amazing IMHO...no going back for me.  And I think some aspects of SA improve, eg it seems easier to see what other planes are doing, and I think my gunnery is better too.  Short answer for me, I love it.   :airplane:

If you usually use vr, do you have to spend lots of time reconfiguring things in ah to switch back to no vr or is it a simple as unplugging the goggles?

The game stores VR settings in their own config files.  You should be able to play either way and not have to mess with settings.

....as Skuzzy says.  It's pretty simple.  For example, after a sortie, I often send/return salutes when I'm in the tower, because I can take my headset off and AH3 goes to full screen on my monitor, and it's easy to type messages.

You would love it. As much as you fly I think you would enjoy it.

I'd say good joystick, throttle, etc comes first, but If you feel your current control setup is working well for you, I'd recommend VR.   I was holding off for better resolution etc on the VR stuff, until a Rift showed up at my house courtesy of my son.  I was quickly awed by the immersive feel of the VR.  Now I'd have a hard time going back to monitor and TrackIR, and would feel like it was a step backward.  Similar to going to TrackIR, VR did take a bit of getting used too.

Everything is kinda fuzzy in vr. Makes wirbles much more of a nuisance and long range shots more difficult. Judging angles and setting up deflection shots feels more natural though.

I find I have better abilities at spotting GVs in VR vs legacy-pilots.
