Please do something about the frame rates :(
« on: October 27, 2001, 09:00:00 PM »
K7 700mhz, 512MB RAM, Geforce2 MX, 1 Gb HD for virtual memory.

And I'm getting framerates similar to those I got in WWIIOL the last I tried it.

I can't understand how 1.08 has divided by framerate by three, but whatever the reason it is, it has absolutely destroyed my ability to fly in furballs...with framerates between 15 and 20.

I have tried downloading all the drivers I could, for no result. I have tried changing resolutions, for no result.

P-L-E-A-S-E HTC, do something about framerates...pliz.

forgot to say, I always close any program I have on background before starting AH...

Just got out from AH pissed after dying in a 10FPS furball  :(

Have you disabled anti-aliasing on your video card? That will usually give you a big boost. Knock it down to 16-bit color for another, smaller boost.

Yep, FSAA is the first thing I always check is disabled each time I put new drivers...

And yep, I tried with 16bit colour. Just 3fps of difference  :(.

Hmmm.

I have a 700mhz Athlon Classic with 512mb of RAM as well. I do have a GeForce2 GTS, but I did not notice a huge difference when I went to it from a GeForce1 DDR.

I am running in 32 bit color at 1280x1024 with Mip Mapping enabled and Palettized Textures disabled.

I get frame rates from 55 down to about 20, unless smoke is involved.

I have a PIII 733 with 768MB SD133, GF2 GTS DDR, and I see in the region of 40's and 50's except in smoke. Have you checked all the drivers on your system? It may not be only the video drivers slowing you down.

You most likely have a VIA chipset and thus need via's "4in1" drivers

I have a frame rate of 70 in the tower...it goes to 47 when I spawn on the runway and less than 30 when I get into the furball.

I'm not yet unable to play, but 1.09 scares me :)

I have 1.4gig athlon, geforce2mx, 384DDR ram, win2k and I get 60-85fps, drops as low as 17 in fully smoking field..

I'd say framerates are no problem in 1.08 if I can play the game with the CHEAPEST videocard on the market at the moment.

R4M, you are clearly CPU limited, heck your CPU is already 2 years old. One year is the average lifespan of a CPU in game use. I also suspect you have some other problems in your setup, you should be getting better framerates with that system. I used to get better framerates with my old 667@901 celeron, and your 700 K7 should be faster than that.

I'd download the latest VIA 4in1 drivers if you use a via board (also make sure you use AMD AGP VxD driver if you have a board with AMD northbridge and VIA southbridge.)

If you run windoze98 and you have 512Mb of ram, you're wasting it. Upgrade to w2k and you'll see some improvement. You do NOT need 1 gig swap file. With 512Mb of ram you shouldn't need a swapfile at all!

Reduce your swap size because it slows down your system.

Ram is right.  Some people have seen a major hit in frame rates when patch 4 was released.   I for one have seen about a 25 FPS hit over all.  This puts me in the 50's to low 60's  which is very much playable.  But as Ram stated ,  there is a frame rate hit with patch 4.    I would imagine that people with low to mid range systems , that have been effected, are really haveing troubles.   Imagine a guy who had mid 30 to low 40's FPS before Patch 4 looseing 25 FPS!!    Ram,  I'm sure HT knows about the problem and is working on fixing it

Cheers.

R4M ..I know this may sound simple/stupid, but did you reinstall DX8?  I have noticed (at times) whenever I install something ... I need to reinstall DX8 or I get poor fps.

The problem does not necessarily have an "HTC will fix it" solution. The bar is always moving in electronic games, we all know this. As a result, system demands will go up. While frame rate probably did take a hit in the last patch, it is natural and will likely happen again. This means that eventually your rig will have to be upgraded/replaced to retain the level of play to which you've become accustomed.

It is possible too that some of the problems can be to some extent handled on the user end by updating drivers and such. That said, it certainly is not fun to be one whose play is diminished by a new patch. Still, 30fps is nothing to sneeze at (trust me, I can tell you where to get far less!) even if you do spike down lower over a busy airfield.

Gotta say this company tends to listen to the concerns of the lower-end user far better than many other companies.

the bar is moving, andf i advocated the bar being moved and chastized those who wanted the game to be playable on 300 mhz machines

but 700 mhz is a respectable machine. i should hope ram  would be able to get at least 30 fps. after all, ah graphics arent *that* jaw dropping

What zigrat said. I dont have a top-grade system, but I'd think is an average-low average one. I dont expect magnific FPS. But to get 13 FPS in a furball is not what I expect from a game where I try to have fun, in a system I think is OK at this moment. Heck, in WWIIOL I was getting framerates around 15fps and I thought that was unnaceptable ('cause IT IS unnaceptable).

I just have solved a problem I had with shared IRQs (had modem and video card in same IRQ), but still have very low FPS. I'll try reinstalling DX8.0a. I'll see if it solves something...wish me luck.

PS: I have a ViA board, but 4in1 drivers are here installed since day one...is not that  :(
