Zen enlightenment is basically kicking your ego out of the control room, without the Freudian terminology.
A zen story calls it riding the water buffalo searching for the water buffalo. Note the implied lack of self-awareness.
Before psychiatry it was mostly demons and devils causing problems but Zen Buddhism realized that talk is endless and unproductive so they went with exercises to develop self-discipline for correct action.
Here in the West we call it growing up.
