Forgive my many questions please
« on: June 18, 2019, 07:39:34 PM »
Ok, first and foremost.. DAMNNNNNN!!! What a pleasure it was getting schooled today in open mealee!! I've been a video game pilot for 20yrs, and a damn good one.. played the hell out of War Online Pacific and was kicking ass.. I felt ready so I paid my $14.95 dues with the intent of insta-domination... hahahaha... Fly for 5 minutes to get to the battlefield, 30seconds to get shot down and repeat.. 6 different planes and 3 hours later, i humbly bow my head in respect to you killers out there.. I am currently in the field medical hospital suffering from Extreem Noobism deficiency disorder.. Hoping to be cleared for flight again soon...

One thing is certain.. I am here to stay.. love it.. so I have a slew of questions hoping to get answered in effort to help me fast track my learning curve...

1.) I am using Oculus Rift to play in VR. Is everybody in the open melee arena in VR or is it cross platform with vr and non vr players in same arena? Is everybody in rift or is it mix htc and rift?
2.) Comms... I figured out the mic well enough, is it all chat where both friendly and enemy can communicate or is it just team chat?
3.) when In tower, how can you change your jump off point or are you designated one spawn point? It seems that I am often very far from the battle.
4.) what are the objectives other than shooting down the enemy? How does a team capture an enemy airfield?

I really appreciate your help gents and all I will say is this.. enjoy shooting me down now while Im noobing because before long I'll be the guy that you HAVE to look out for and I will be doing it in the oddball planes that nobody really uses.. 😉😎

Again, Thank you for the schooling today, good job to the enemy that repeatedly shot me down and to the team I was on.. deepest apologies for being cannon fodder and a hindrance to the mission..

Welcome to Aces High. Questions are good.  Questions are how we learn.

This is a link to an official Aces High web page which will answer a lot of your questions:

http://trainers.hitechcreations.com/first-timers/learning-to-fly

This is a link to my very unofficial web page which may also answer some questions:

https://kentwoodstationnet.000webhostapp.com/NewPilots/NewPilotsStart.html

Now some of your specific questions:

1.)  Not everyone is using VR.  I'm not.  I have a simple joystick and screen set up.

2.)  Chat and voice are mostly your own team. There is a text channel, 200, which lets you chat with all players on all teams.  It often is full of trash talk, so be wary.
Check this page out from the Aces High Site:
https://www.hitechcreations.com/the-game-interface/using-the-radio

Check this page out from Kentwood Station:
https://kentwoodstationnet.000webhostapp.com/NewPilots/TextAndRadio.html

3.)  When in the tower, you are at a specific airfield.  You can double-click on a friendly field to jump to that field, and launch from there.  Since this is a flight simulator, you take off, climb out, and fly to where ever the fight is.  Once you learn to read the map, it will help you find the fight.

4.)  Shooting down the enemy is, of course, the first objective.  But we do have goals to give us something to fight for.  You can work with other players to capture an enemy field.  If you read through the links I posted it will give you a clearer picture.

Basically most airfields have a town nearby.  You have to kill 75% of the buildings in town.  Once you do that, the flag in town turns white, indicating it can be captured.  Then you drop troops in town.  If all ten of your troops make it to the map room in town, you capture the field.  There are anti-aircraft guns around the town, and they will kill your troops, so you have to kill the guns as well as destroy the buildings.  This is just the basic capture model for an airfield.  There are other rules for vehicle bases and ports, etc.  But this should get you started.

Check out the links I posted.  Others will undoubtedly chime in with more info.  Welcome to Aces High.

Welcome! I was hoping you would come over from War Online. You seemed enthusiastic and we need that here.

1.) I am using Oculus Rift to play in VR. Is everybody in the open melee arena in VR or is it cross platform with vr and non vr players in same arena? Is everybody in rift or is it mix htc and rift?

AH supports a number of VR setups. many types are used, but as a guess I think maybe less than a third use VR. the rest use hat switches or in the case of old timers the number pad on the keyboard. Dont think it gives you an advantage with VR. I have used all three setups and I still think my thumb moves faster than my head in VR  :devil But yes all versions .... thumb, number pads, and VR are are used in the arenas.

2.) Comms... I figured out the mic well enough, is it all chat where both friendly and enemy can communicate or is it just team chat?

when you hit the "/" key by default it opens the radio bar. Each of the first 4 drop downs can be set to different channels, all text channels. The last box is VOX or voice over internet. Drag you mouse over the name/number and type in a new channel on any of the drop downs. Under 200 is country/team, over 200 is all three countries/teams.

3.) when In tower, how can you change your jump off point or are you designated one spawn point? It seems that I am often very far from the battle.

As Mongoose said, double clicking on any green base on the map will move you to that field. Remember, upping at a field in the middle of the action means you'll be low and slow for all those killers that are higher and faster. Most people up one bas back from the action and use the time from the back base to get a bit of altitude and speed. Some take it to extremes and climb to 20k+, other set a cap at 10K and work the fights from there, or less. Its up to you how much of an alt advantage you want to give the enemy.

Quote
4.) what are the objectives other than shooting down the enemy? How does a team capture an enemy airfield?

You need the guns in town (or on the field for vehicle bases), and a white flag for airfield towns (yellow dot near fields on the map), or Vehicle hangers down at vehicle bases to drop 10 troops either by M3, or C47 "goonie" to capture the fields. Listening in on "local" (purple) channel on the radio can help you follow along with what other players near you on your team are doing.

There are also "Achievements" you can earn. While they dont help win the war they are sometimes fun to complete and help you earn those "stars" you see next to other players names.

 SAAM I AM

Im guessing your name in the game is SAAMIAM. If it is your doing pretty good, 4 kills, 1 assist in 13 sorties. This game is tough, and most of the guys/gals you'll be flying against have been doing it a long time. I myself have been playing this game for 13 years and STILL get shot down a lot. As long as you have fun and dont let the "deaths" bother you this game is a blast! There is lots to learn, and lots to do. A lot of friendly people are here and are very willing to help you out.

Never worry about asking questions, between all of us here, we have an answer.

Again, Welcome!

Welcome to AH Saam.

There are a couple of other aspects of the game that might be of interest to you, like joining up with a squad.  There are many squads looking for new recruits and I think that is the fasted way improve your skill and knowledge in AH.  Another is FSO, it takes place 3 Friday nights a month at 11:00 pm eastern in the Special Events Arena.  It's a squad event, but you don't have to join a squad, just hook up with one before the start.  It's a 2 hour scenario with objectives and missions assigned.  Some say it's the best part of AH.

Welcome to Aces High <S>  Not seeing you fight or knowing you at all but knowing you've flown flight sims and know BFM/ACM it's really just getting to know the new flight model and game mechanics I'd venture to say.
The ONLY question we won't forgive is the one you don't ask!!

Wayyyyyy back from 2007 to 2010

I just downloaded AHIII after quite a few years since playing it several hours a week, stated on "Confirmed Kill", then "Warbirds", then "AH" when it 1st came out.. Have to learn from scratch also, just thought the "wayyyyyy back" comment was funny..

I'm now xxIcerxx, in keeping with my original login name of "Icer". I will say check around and join a squad that fits your schedule and gameplay type, makes it a LOT better flying with others and having people looking out for you.. at least it used to!

Welcome to the new addiction!

Aside from the MA, we hope you check us out in Friday Squad Operations (FSO) and other special events.  If you are able to show up but don't have a squad to fly with the first time, we will help to get you matched up with an organized squad so you can get the full experience.

Glad to have you in the community!

Hey Devil Dog, I flew with you this morning during the slaughter of being outnumbered 9 to 3.. Semper Fi and thanks for the back up.. each day I get better and better.. Thanks To DLO, Higheye, Racdog, and the rest of the midnight oil burners for answering my noob questions and guiding me to victory.. As for AkAk... that guy kills me... literally.. LOL.
If you dont have VR, Get it and I swear you will never play any other way again.. I fell out of my chair today when I landed my beat up Typhoon because when I came to a stop the momentum carried me out of my chair onto the floor.. crazy..
My kill death ratio is shiity but honestly what can I really expect when I come into an already very very hard game to learn and oh yeah... the other players you face as a noob just happen to be hardcore veterans of the game with 10 to 15 years playing.. I keep coming back for love of the game, spirit of competition and because Marines never ever walk away from a good fight.. Oohh Rhaahh.. I imagine if the tables were turned and you all came into Ace Combat where I am the 15 yr vet you would experience the same punishment.. but you wont. Why? Because I shelved Ace Combat for a real Flight combat game!, see you in the skies Boys!!
