I saw Bob Hoover at the Apple Valley Airport California in 1975. The runway was north to south and I was at the end of the runway south side. The wind was out of the west at a steady 15 miles per hour with gust up to 25 miles per hour. He flew his 51 down the runway on one wheel. Then he went full power and you could see the black exhaust come pouring out and up he went. This really impressed me since the planes I'd been flying were limited to the 15 mph crosswind.
His book Always Flying is a great read!
