Operation Torch Oran 1942 plane set.
« on: December 14, 2019, 09:03:15 AM »
Now I normally don't complain about setups in FSO, but this one really has me pissed off.

Dewoitine D 520 performance specs:

Max speed: 329mph
Climb rate: 2369ft/min
Armament: 1 20mm hispano-Suiza 404 cannon with 60 rounds firing through propeller hub and 4 7.5mm Mac 1934 machine gun with 500 rounds each in wings.

Yakovlev Yak-7b Performance specs:

Max speed: 373 mph/ 355ish mph in AH
Climb rate: 3940ft/min / 3100ft/min aprox. in AH
Armament: 1 20mm ShVak cannon with 140 rounds firings through propeller hub and 2 12.7mm Beresin BS above engine.

Now I don't know why the AH version is slower and less climb rate then what I have actually found on Yak-7b looking at multiple books I have and internet resources I have looked at.  The Yak-7b in the game should not have been used in this FSO in place of the D-520.  If anything, the Brewster should have been used.  The plane set for the Axis is overwhelmingly out performing the allied in all categories except turning.  They out climb, Faster by 60+mph and out gun.  Hell, even the bombers are faster by a large margin.  This FSO is setup to be a slaughter house.  .303's machine guns vers .50 cal and 20mm cannons along with the speed and climb rate differences by large margins.

F4f's barely break 300 mph at 10K
Sea Hurricane breaks 300mph at 14k

I felt like I was fighting 262's the way the Yaks blasted away from the Hurri's.

Please do assess, and adjust.  If this is what FSO is, why play?  I don't like it even when it cuts my way.

Awesome
"When one considers just what they should say to a new pilot who is logging in Aces High, the mind becomes confused in the complex maze of info it is necessary for the new player to know. All of it is important; most of it vital; and all of it just too much for one brain to absorb in 1-2 lessons" TC

Hawk 75... 266mph, P-40C can crack 340mph. Lets not get started on the armament.

P40c is not that tuff.  It doesn't accelerate quickly like that yak-7b.  Its climb rate is not out of this world like the yak-7b.  The P40 and the Hawk 75 along with the F4F was actually in that battle in real life, so it should be in the FSO.  I personally don't mind having 1 fighter marginally outperform across the board compared to the rest as long as it isn't over the top like the yak-7b.

Flu knocked me out of this frame, but frame 1 was ridiculous. We would have been better off just not taking off and saving the points.

lol, no it wasn't.  109's out climb by a large margin and out accelerate f4u's.  The f4u is only faster by a small margin (10-30mph depending on alt) and will out turn a 109 depending on speed.  Last FSO, axis planes were killing more then the allied planes.  :aok

All this aside It's a great time to suggest the "why does it need to be historical" month and just give both sides the same exact planes.  I say it would be interesting...

Soccer War setup would be fun.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

The Yak-7b oversight was carryover from the previous running of Torch two years ago when they were a bit better neutralized by P-40Fs. Unfortunately we did not see it coming until it was too late, but hopefully the adjustments for Frame 3 will make the event enjoyable for all. We have been trying to incorporate new/different match-ups to keep FSO from getting stale, unfortunately sometimes it does not work out as planned.

With that said, if anyone would like to help make FSOs better and grow, feel free to reach out to me. We are always looking for volunteers on the design and setup side of things.

One side will always think they got the short end of the stick. The yaks could have been replaced with a {109 or insert your idea here} and it still wouldnt matter.

I ask myself this simple question, did I have fun? I can only remember 1 or maybe 2 times when the answer was no and that may have been a personal gripe at that.

There's 1 frame left,CM's have done a bunch of work for us to have fun so let's all try to have fun and start a new setup next year!

PS: Dogg you were doing great in frame 1 but got overwhelmed by numbers, you had that F4 twisting like an SOB.

Thx Morfiend  :salute

And see, I didn't mind that battle because I was having fun.  Wasn't getting BnZ'd to death.  Was mainly P40c I was fighting against which was a pretty even fight till the numbers were against me.  Yes, I got overwhelmed but that is part of the game.  Problem was I couldn't get away because the yaks were just so much faster, I could get away or even scissor fast enough to even get my guns on them before they were already 600+ yards and pulling away rapidly.  I always try to give it my all.  I don't make it easy or at least try not to, lol
