In 1918 nobody knew what the flu was. Average life expectancy was 54 years. Communication was slow.

Many things are better now if you practice good habits.

In 1918, population density was lower, there were way fewer people, amount of travel was less, and there was no air travel to take infections to all corners of the world within a week.

Absent availability of a useful vaccine, a 1918-style flu today would result in a much bigger problem than even in 1918.

For the 1918 flu, it affected the young and healthy the most.  That is unusual, but one hypothesis is that older people had been exposed to an earlier flu that, while not the same, resulted in partial immunity or at least reduction of effect.

There is a great book on the 1918 pandemic:  Flu, by Gina Kolata.  A great book -- very interesting.

The pneumonia is from the novel corona virus, it seems to target the lungs. Pneumonia is caused by various viruses and bacteria. You can only be inoculated for known viruses that have vaccines. So far there is no vaccine for the novel corona virus. Best protection is normal flu prevention practice.
