CBD for pain relief
« on: October 28, 2020, 05:16:22 PM »
I know the crowd who plays this game is on the older side.  :old: I am sure many of you suffer from some sort of chronic pain. I was wondering if any of you have tried CBD. Last month I said what the heck and bought some of the Tommy Chong stuff. It is nano-CBD, which is the new thing I guess. Supposedly it is more bio-available. A little bit goes a long way according to them. I have to say, it works. I don't have what you would call severe pain, but being a large fella I do get my aches and I have went from eating 3 or 4 800mb Ibuprofen a day to one at most, sometimes none. I am really curious about other brands that any of you might have tried. All of them have reviews, but I would rather rely on the opinion of actual people in the real world (or virtual world hehe). Anyway, I know this is kind of an odd post, but I am curious about other people's experiences with CBD for pain.

I have tried some CBD products but never really found one that solidly worked.  I do on the other hand use cannabis, including a high CBD strain.  I most certainly enjoy the recreational side of it, but it has also brought me some relief for multiple issues.  Got a bunch of aches and pains myself and rarely find myself reaching  for the ibuprofen or muscle relaxants now.  It also very much helps with stress/anxiety relief, which I also believe contributes to physical ailments.  But by far for me the best benefit is as a sleep aid, works wonderfully and gets me off a prescription that had me concerned about the long term side effects.

I realize you were asking about CBD and my reply doesn't directly relate but just wanted to share because I believe there is a lot of beneficial cannabinoids beyond just CBD and hopefully someday when people educate themselves all their benefits can be studied.  Hopefully it will be legal in my state come spring, thanks Covid as they are desperate for money, and be able to explore many more strains for their benefits.

In the meantime maybe I will have to give the Tommy Chong CBD a try.  Always looking for the benefits without necessarily experiencing the intoxication.

for me it seemed like it took a few days to build up in my system or something. the chong nano-cbd is 100mg per bottle, but their claim is that it is 8-10x as effective as normal cbd oils. Also it is not an oil formulation, it is water based and includes some other ingredients, vitamins and melatonin and velerian for the night time dose. My initial mistake was not taking it sublingual. I tried just mixing it with a drink and that didn't seem to do the trick. Anyway, thanks for the reply. I too enjoy the ganja but unfortunately in WV it is still illegal and they are slow as heck about implementing the medical cannibus that they already approved. But we are #50 in everything, so it will probably be another 20 years before we catch up.

In my past 45 years of experience I have found the best CBD products have >100x more THC in them than CDB

I have a lot of arthritis.  We have legal medical marijuana here, and on the ballot an initiative to legalize recreational.   I find while counter-intuitive, staying physically active and strong helps my arthritis a lot, although it may cause short-term pain too.   I especially enjoy long hikes in the mountains.  But to get back to the OP topic I make my own edibles from both high THC & high CBD bud, and use about a 50:50 ratio.  It's helped me cut back about 80% on NSAID and opioid pain meds and also on prescription sleep med.  What I don't like about it is I get really dry eyes and mouth.  Like many things you build a tolerance to THC & CBD both, and either need to keep increasing your dose, or take breaks to keep your dose low.  I know folks here that use various CBD commercial products.  But for me, other than the bit of extra work, I like getting the bud because I know what is in my concoction, and my local favorite high CBD strain (Nightengale) is about 20% CBD, that's 200 mg of CBD for $10, which is good for about 15 doses at my current dosage.

I know.. i been sitting on my butt way to much for the last 30 years. lol. it caught up to me. i am only 48 but i feel 148. do you use one of those machines to make your edibles? I am afraid of screwing up and wasting the bud.

Have rheumatoid arthritis and degenerative disc disease. Making your self get up and move makes a world of difference.

Have found CBD helps but the best is a mixture of CBD and THC. I haven't taken any kind of pain meds for years and rarely even ibuprofen. Also moved from a terrible humid/stormy climate, to a desert climate. Made a huge difference!

I tried a salve that I got for my wife for her hands. I was blown away how well it works. It is about 50/50 CBD and THC. It is called "Nordic Goddess balm". You don't feel much if anything from the THC content. The key to the balms seems to be a mixture of CBD and THC and works better than just CBD. Wife doesn't like the high from THC and this works wonders. Would be my number 1 thing to try first.

Different strains of cannabis work better than others for your specific needs. Like Bug said it really helps for sleeping.

from what you guys are telling me, i need a mixture of thc and cbd for the best results. there are seeds now...called auto flower. a friend of mine used them. I might look into that. I just wish it would go legal nation wide. It would save so much suffering. I know there would be kids and idiots that abused it, but I feel like the good would out weigh the bad. I just hope the government does it before I get so old that I can't enjoy it.

I tried CBD... did not do anything for me BUT I did sleep
better (I guess)... I prefer the real THC... However, I prefer
to bake it  something or add it to a salad
BTW... heating THC in a frying pan for a minute or so
(for me) seems to increase its potency

If by THC you are referring to flower it has to be heated to decarboxylate to fully activate the THC(drying/curing does activate a small amount), before using in edibles.

Autoflowers are plants that have been crossed with the ruderalis subspecies(opposed to sativa or indica).  It makes for a smaller plant, quicker growth cycle and the reason for its name is that it begins flowering no matter the light cycle at a roughly set time period.  There are pluses and minuses to growing autoflowers instead of photo-period but their genetics have much improved it seems and are becoming very popular.  Growing the plants themselves becomes a hobby and therapy in itself.

I too hope it becomes legal soon.  The mindset that made is illegal is extremely dated, ignorant and oppressive.

Would love to get ahold of some THC/CBD salve.  I have read having the THC in there makes a huge difference.  Contemplated making my own, but just haven't got around to it yet.  Made my own edibles but getting the dosage right is not easy.  Taking too much is not fun, trust me.   :O

True, best to follow the adage "start low and go slow" if you're new to edibles.  And give it some time, like at least 2 hours, before you decide to increase the dose.  The active ingredients are fat-soluble, and take some time to assimilate and metabolize.

I'm very careful with weighing everything  when I make my edibles.  One nice aspect of the legal bud here is that is labeled with the % THC, CBD, etc....so I can carefully dose myself.  Lately about 13 mg each THC & CBD seems about right for me.  Following total hip replacement surgery last fall I was up to more like about 25 mg each to get the desired effect, and that on top of other pain meds then.  Now it's mostly 2 aleve prior to a big hike, then my "concoction" after dinner to help with sleep, about 2 to 4 nights/ week.

My local clinic suggests decarbing 30 minutes at 250 degrees.
