Well, who knows what will happen?
Here is my guess. It’s a given there are some hayseed House Republicans that will try and challenge the Electoral Vote. Probably some inbred like Mo Brooks.
The question is will they find a Senate Stooge to play along.
I wouldn’t be surprised. But there are a couple of reasons why they might not.
First, all that will do is harm many Republican Senators who have difficult races in 2022. They either join a suicide pact with a failing, increasing unpopular failed President, or risk publicly voting against him and getting primaried by a radicalized base. It’s a no-win situation.
And it won’t help anything. There are already enough Republican Senators who have signaled they will shoot down a vote to discard the Electors. And regardless, there is no possible chance in any Trumpian fever dream that the House would vote that way. It’s a dead end that will only cost the Republicans a few more Senators in 2022.
Also, it does nothing but put Pence in a no-win situation. He might have a chance in 2024, but this election showed Republicans need to still appeal to the moderate independents to pull enough votes to win. Get pulled into to some doomed to fail nutty conspiracy to overthrow the election will only burn his bridges with any independents.
Of course that’s all fine with Donny. He plans to have his own Trump party by 2024 so getting sitting Republican Senators and a potential rival Mike Pence to voluntarily cut their own political throats is just fine with him.
The only smart move here for Republicans is for Senators to ignore the play. I’m sure McConnell is make the rounds letting every Senator know that any one who puts the party in that position will be dead meat. We’ll see if he can hold the line.
When inbred Mo raises the motion, McConnell will be eye-balling his flock with a look that says, “Sit on your fricken hands and keep you pie-holes shut!”
With no Senator jumping in to second, the motion fizzles and no one is forced into no-win situations.
Or they may be crazier than I thought and they all go full Leroy Jenkins!
Regardless, the House will defeat the measure if it comes to a vote. Dead end.
