Since artillery will eventually be in the game...
« on: April 12, 2000, 09:45:00 PM »
We know that Pryo stated that arty will be in the game and they where thinking about adding the M-7 Priest as a vehicle.  I figured I would add a few more suggestions.

I think we should keep the artillery at this point self propelled, so we can keep the same system of driving/flying-gunner.

I was thinking of 2 other possible types of artillery, one is the 15cm Panzerwerfer 42 auf Selbstfahrlafette Sd.Kfz.4/1 , its a 10 tube rocket launcer on a 3 ton halftraked chassis that is fully armored.  It also has a 7.92mg for an extra weapon to fire.  The range of the rockets is 6700 meters . This would be a great vehilce to add since its self propelled and it also has that extra machinegun to fire.

The other vehilce I was thinking of would be one of the Katyusha rocket launcers, it was used by the Soviets and was mounted on various trucks, Im afraid I dont have  an other info on it

What about adding a bren carrier with a MG to help capture bases, it could carry a few troops?

Question,
In real life how long did it take to load one of those rocket launcers? How did they get the rockets to the launcher? (trucks?)

How long once fired before it can be loaded again? (And how long would that take?)

And how would that best be simulated in AH?

Before we can use artillery effectively, we need two things:

- Way to determine range. Initial spotting rounds are needed but it is very difficult to judge distance to target in 2D world.

- Fast spotting vehicle. This is self explanatory. To use indirect fire, rounds must be directed to target. Slow recon plane is ok but too vulnerable. Fast Jeep or Kubelwagen would be nice. Also bailed out pilot or similar accomplishes the task.

I yesterday tried shelling enemy field with PzKw IVH. What I quickly found out is that fields are too far away. Secondly determining range takes many many rounds, depleting ammo supplies. Thirdly ground forces benefit much from air cover as I found out.

Would it be nice to see four Hummel's bombing enemy city with indirect fire?

Let's take it down a notch.

the game is concentrated on combat, not on shaking the screen.

I actually spoke with him on the phone not to terribly long ago and mentioned introducing artillery.  He seemed noncommital, but said they had thought about it.

I personally think it'd be a good thing.
