Maybe it’s just me but this film reminded me a lot of Steinbeck novels.

A psychopath would have no need for the coin flip device, as a psychopath doesn't experience guilt. He addresses the clerk as sir at one point. A psycho wouldn't show any deference to a perceived inferior when there's nothing to gain from it.

on the other hand he killed the guy's wife after he already had the money.  she wasnt even involved.

He kept his word. He’s quixotic like that. Just about everything that comes out of a psychopaths mouth is a lie.

Also he took a risk by letting the gas station owner live. Psycho wouldn’t have.
