Roger Waters?
« on: August 08, 2022, 11:28:03 AM »
Anyone gone to see his current tour?  I've always been a fan of his music.  Floyd just wasn't the same without him...

David Gilmore IS Pink Floyd. Waters is not missed at all.

Just sayin.

Gilmour is one of the greatest guitarists of all time.  However, he is not nearly the musical visionary that Waters is.  That being said, a Roger Waters NEEDS a David Gilmour to tell him when he's gone too far.  Although he probably figures he's got enough money, Waters has effectively alienated easily one-half of his potential and former audience.

I think that Roger Waters was the main force behind Pink Floyd. He was responsible for writing and for putting into motion most of their greatest works.
He had the vision and he ran the show.

David is a better musician and singer for sure, but take away Rogers Waters and you would not have had Pink Floyd. You might think that same thing applies to David, but it does not.

Roger Waters made most of that stuff happen and wrote most of it.

I can't even listen to the garbage "Pink Floyd" put out after Rogers left. David is not a good songwriter at all. I think he struggled to get each album done. I think he played way over his head in even getting them completed without Rogers. David pretty much even said so himself.

But no one's opinion is going to change.

I happen to be correct and the people in David's camp are wrong  :aok

I saw his last US tour, it's a great show. Roger without David is rubbish and David without Roger is tolerable. Still, they need each other to be complete the dynamic genius that is Pink Floyd.

GG, that garbage (Momentary Lapse and Division Bell) is subjectively amazing. It's less political and absolutely stunning musically. But, it certainly isn't the same. For me, Floyd peaked with Animals. The Final Cut was awful, in my opinion, and it was time for them to split ways.

I enjoyed the Final Cut but I understand why many didn't.  That was Roger off the leash; basically a Roger Waters solo album.  It does appear however, that a significant number of people do enjoy being finger wagged at.

Gilmour had to enlist other songwriters and a producer just to get that first album out after Roger, and he even said it was difficult without Rogers. He had co-writers on everything. And it was mediocre garbage.

If you want hard facts though, just look at the songwriting credits of all the Pink Floyd Songs. Roger Waters is the sole or main songwriter on nearly every single one of them. Roger Waters ran that band and he directed everything.

Roger Waters came to the rest of the band with The Wall nearly completely written, plus another Album and told them they could pick which one to make. They chose The Wall.

I've been in a band with three good songwriters. There is always someone who makes it all happen. The person who has the vision and directs the band. Gives a direction. That was Roger Waters

And I agree that both of them together is WAY better than either of them on their own.

I do not view David Gilmour as a good songwriter. Not even close. I think he's a great musician and singer. I think he added tremendously to the songs.

I view Roger Waters as a creative genius. Also an a-hole.

Of course, performing songs is not the same as creating the songs.

Can they put on a good show? Of course. Can gilmour write a great song or album. Nope.
