How much money does a regular semi truck cost?

You can easily break the $250,000 mark for a new diesel tractor.

Quote
In general, a brand new Kenworth semi truck is about $170,000. The prices of the Kenworth W900, T680, and T880 are $160k, $170k, and 190k respectively. Price varies per model and each model has its own unique specifications and add-ons to give you a true feel of the range Kenworth has to offer.

The $200,000 predicted price in the OP isn't really out of line for one of these trucks.

I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

Brutal heat wave will push California's energy grid to limit during Labor Day weekend

If a Flex Alert is issued, customers will be asked to set their thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, avoid using large appliances and charging electric vehicles, and turn off unnecessary lights.

Where I live and using the price of diesel and the price of a kW/h, the "fuel" cost of the electric truck should be about 1/3 of the diesel truck. I will add that electricity is far cheaper in other areas of the country.

BUT,

It's not uncommon for quality built and well maintained diesel trucks to do as much as 750,000 miles in their service life...some even more. The jury is out on the long term cost of maintenance on electric motors and lithium-ion batteries. Also can the generation grid in all areas handle the load of all this new demand - that remains to be seen.

This of course remains to be seen. Testing is very important before jumping in head first.

California just asked people not to charge their EVs because of the demand during this heat wave.
California has over 1 million registered EVs - 43% of all Evs in the USA.
If we can't manage the power grid how do they expect to have 30 million or so EVs?

As long as I can remember the power grid has been messed up in California and they never fixed it. Rolling blackouts have been common for decades.

So what they doing to address this ahead of banning all new gas cars by 2035?

It's simple Gina.  Just wait for the Self Driving vehicles to hit the streets.
That will thin people out real quick.  Drivers and pedestrians alike.

Seems odd. All the EV manufacturers that I checked warrant the battery for 10 years.

Seems the USA wants to be self-sufficient on oil and gas. I guess the PTB's didn't think electricity was that important.

The story was based on a copy of an estimate for the battery of a 2012 Chevrolet Volt. An old technology battery.

I wonder if that transfers with resale.

Right now one of my vehicles is sitting at 180k. As a matter of fact it is the same model year as the one in the article. With proper maintenance the drivetrain will last it another, possibly much more. They know how many cycles the batteries will last. It’s a fixed number. No matter what you do nothing will change that number all you can do is drive less.

Not only can the battery packs be rebuilt they are also capable of being recycled. There’s a Canuck company that’s now recycles lithium batteries, something close to 95% of the materials are recycled and turned into new products and batteries.

As for recharge times well with regulations on how many hours a driver can drive without a rest stop it becomes moot. 500miles is very close to or over the limit of hours a driver can do.

In Ontario a driver can’t drive more than 13 hours in a day so I guess that’s about 780 miles, let’s call it 800 so 1 stop to eat/rest and relive while it recharges seems a reasonable thing to do.

Now brakes and tires will be the biggest cost on using an EV semi, or close to it.

Anyone have the ecological hit the environment takes with all the needed mining just for the batteries? How about their disposal?

If they dropped the climate  crap, some might buy into it as just an alternative to gas powered

It's the switch to this or nothing mandate is what is the problem for some of us
