Needing color help
« on: December 25, 2000, 07:22:00 PM »
I'm looking for the US Army olive drab color used in 1943 when the 8th AF first started flying P-47s.  Ideally I'd like a web page with a complete color guide used on 8th AF fighters, but I'd be happy with just a proper olive drab.

I found a page here that has olive drab, #6B8E23.  My problem is it looks too green.  Most of the models I see look almost brown.  Even this picture the jug looks brown, yet these early jugs were "olive drab".

 Try emailing    PanzerandPoet@home.com

His name is Scott. He does all WWII model planes with weathered colors and battle damage. he's really good. I'm sure he could help you out with the paint question.

Sancho:

The O.D. color you're looking for is OD41.  You can get the exact color from Aeromaster warbird acrylics or you can get the Testors version of it FS34087 (Model Master) Gunze Sanyo has it but I don't know the number as probably does Polly Scale.  The underside color is Neutral Grey. Can't remember the USAAC code for it though; 43 seems to be stuck in my memory.

clicked the wrong button....but 43 is the correct shade for neutral grey and the Aeromaster warbird acrylic line is now out of production.

Thanks for the replies!  Sorry I was unclear--I am not building a physical model.    I am doing a profile picture on my computer of Bud Mahurin's P-47D-5-RE, circa January '44.  This one:

What would help most is either a web page that has a swatch of the correct color, or better still, a 6 digit hexidecimal color code.  Or maybe someone could just tell me... "a little darker" or "a little greener"   , or provide any other criticisms to help me improve its historical accuracy.

Thanks guys!
