Combat Pilot - Flight Sim Expo 2024
« on: June 21, 2024, 09:26:34 PM »

Early, early, early rough tech prototyping.

Actually didn't expect them to be this far along.  Best of luck to them.  It's an ambitious project.

Don't know IL2 well enough.

In what way?

Doesn't look like much yet, but they are moving forward.  Nice to see a new player jumping in.

WWII must be a good enough genre to start a whole new greenfield franchise and get funding for it.  That's encouraging.

Yup. It will be as much like IL-2 as AH is like AW.

I won’t even touch on the investor things.

DCS is so slow and full of bs this sounds like it’s done fast.

Probably why AH attempt there failed...

Who wants a Pacific setup when you can make it air war over Europe ..

Hmm I prefer ETO I think, but a lot of folks love PTO.

We were in ETO because Nazi are scum and felt obligated to pitch in and defeat them.
PTO was America's War.  PTO was personal.  We got sneak-attacked.

Midway?  Coral Sea?  Cactus Air Force?!!?!?!  A lot of fun potential.

Are you referring to HTC's Pacific War?  Sigh.  That one had so many bad decisions wrapped together, but PTO as an AO was in no way one of its problems.

If they execute well, PTO will be more popular than 1C's Korea I bet.  Korea who?

The most important thing is the presence of a pulse.  A living breathing thing.  Activity.  Signs of life.  Lines of code being written.  First new WWII franchise in two decades.

I think carrier ops would be a blast, but my main concern would be the flight times to action that would have been typical.

One of my favorites from the past  :D:

It’s always been PTO for me. CFS2 was my jam back in the day!
Back in 2022 after a loooooong break from 2010. Old name Ratpack, same for the BBS.

Squad I did the most tours with were the Excaliburs then The 172nd Rabid Dogs. Still trying to talk Illigaf, Coola, Oldman22, and Joecrow into coming back instead of being boring old farts!

I don’t mind PTO, but I mind it as a single choice.

Even in AW ETO was more popular than PTO. Visually its easier to get burned out on just water and ships. Everything else could be perfect, but retaining a long term audience is questionable. Players will still fly other sims to get ETO fix.

I see they are trying to be different and fill a void, but I cam’t imagine any flight sim not having ETO, more happened there than PTO in WWII. That said, players love the beauty of land terrain. And landing a damaged AC is probably out of the picture.

I think people are happy a new sim is created more than seeing its a very narrow slice of WWII action.

What caught my ear was MP, but they didn’t say what that means. If its not more than 100 players my interest dips.

It does sound like a IL-2 concept.
Would love to be wrong.

I don't think it oozed anything wth such a rough presentation. They barely had exterior shots of a couple of planes and ships. Notice no instruments in the interior cockpits. The water looked like crap too. They're a long, long way off. Years before anything playable. It's good to see someone putting together a new WW2 era flight sim. I'll probably wait until they add New Guinea. I don't see a P-38 in there before then!

Agreed.

I think they will run into issues with investors wanting returns. They are walking a tight rope. Will their nose ever be above water.

Remember when Janes Plane came out?

Your utopian idea of the entire world of internet gaming collapsing leaving AH as the last game standing is just straight crazy. You really need to get past this.

Agreed.  I wouldn't draw any conclusions yet.  Just a tech demo of some concepts.  To me the only import is proves that movement is occurring.

I'm intrigued by the use of Unreal5.  I thought it had problems are very large scale with decimal precision drift.  The further away you were from the origin, the courser\less accurate you position accuracy could be which started causing chaos with collision detection, etc.

I think WB ran into that in doing some testing with that framework in 2020ish.  Maybe that has been resolved since then.

Interesting.  I guess that has improved.

If you’re referring to me…
I didn’t intensionally imply that at all.

My fixation with MP goes back to AW. Insert any game name. If someone comes up with a good MP, graphics, payment model I’m in.

Right now, AH has what I seek, trying to get numbers up so its more enjoyable until something comes along with what I mentioned. I can think of other things to do with time without trying to keep a sim alive until then, like AW and AH.

I’m attached to a concept, not a game name.

People read too much and over think what I say and do.
Its about keeping the MP concept alive. If AH goes its gone. Its not about the game, its about the concept. Its that easy.

I also tried to keep AW alive long after it was graphic worthy.

Show me another sim with the above and I will run over you to get there.

I didn’t like others making it harder to retain a concept that is in the edge if being lost to 80 player limit servers and greedy payment models.

I think people should do what makes them happy, but cause no harm to what others like. What was going on did exactly that. So its reversed, their way is the only way, Utopia.
