Another Completed Model
« on: February 17, 2025, 01:47:52 PM »
Well, finished another one recently. A 1/32 scale TBD-1 Devastator.

Finished in the colors of Commander Waldron who led Torpedo Squadron 8 at Midway. Before you say anything about the meatballs on the bottom of the wings, I have some backup. T-16 was a backup aircraft. He typically would have flown T-1, but that aircraft was damaged. Replacement aircraft were hung from the hangar deck and I have read some instances of the replacements not having the meatballs painted off. The bottom of the wing would have been in so close to the ceiling that they were not painted out.

You can see this on John Ford's movie that he made of Torpedo Squadron 8 for a few of the aircraft. I chose to go this route as it seems logical and likely.

I also changed out the rear gunner weapon. Before they left, Waldron raided the Dauntless squadron for the twin .50s, and I was able to find a resin print for that.

Nicely done! I really need to get back into this. Probably have way over a hundred unbuilt kits. Had to buy a couple of the Tamiya P-38s! Figured when I actually retired I would get to them. Hasn't happened yet.

LOL! same here! I have a 1/144 apache that is about ready for paint, but Im stalled there. Spend too much time shoveling the driveway, chores around the house while the wife still works, heck just keeping up with the darn cat takes up time!!!!

This was the Trumpeter kit. Went together very well and I almost want to build a yellow wing version.

That's amazing work. I'd love to go back in time and put this kind of time and effort into the model kits I built as a teen. Patience and detail were not my forte then. If I had built models such as this I doubt I'd have felt compelled to explode them with M-80's, shoot them with 22 caliber missiles and allow them to burn as they couldn't escape the battle on their own.
Nowadays, the hands are steady but the vision is terrible up close. Wearing a loupe or magnifying glasses will help with that I suppose. I'd give air brushing a whirl and take my time now that I have some and I'd be far less sloppy with the glue. I may just start assembling a tool set for giving this a try in the not too distant future.

Fantastic job with this, I'll bet it was satisfying to finish her up, sit back and take it all in. Thanks for sharing it.
