Chickens/Eggs
« on: March 05, 2025, 08:46:03 AM »
I was responding to the discussion about chicken eggs but it got locked.

Chickens are not that hard to raise and don't take much space. You can keep them even in the city if you don't have a rooster as they're pretty easy to hide if needed.
2 baby chicks would cost under $10 would give you around to a dozen of eggs a week during the summer. A $20 bag of chicken feed will last quite a while for 2 chickens.  Keep in mind it takes a few months for them to get to egg laying age. (which I think is part of the issue that is causing egg prices to be so high at this time) I'm willing to help if anybody wants to get started.

We watched a documentary on chicken farms..it's disgusting how most are raised .. I can see how they are easily diseased..most don't move but inches their entire life..free ranged are better

It also covered other animal farming including salmon..just as disgusting

Home grown everything is much healthier than what we buy but most are way too lazy to do much more than waddle into the nearest restaurant and be served..

True. Lil more to it.

Based on memories of the farm decades ago….

However, depending on species, most chickens only produce eggs in any large degree for only 2-3 yrs and egg production declines every year.  When they decline they go on your table. Basically for each chicken you get about one egg per day and not every day.

So you need to raise more and time it to where they mature on time to replace the one that gies on your table.

Basically,  you’ll need a small chicken coup with about 6-12 birds to keep up with egg usage.
You’ll also have to keep them healthy enough to lay eggs.

To produce your own fertile eggs for replacement chickens you’ll need 1-2 roosters for breeding. And you have to keep everything real clean and check for diseases.

A little of birds you’ll need a conveyor belt under the cages to keep fecal matter constantly removed. Exposure to bird fecal matter can cause lung issues in you and them. Birds at home not a great idea unless the cage is cleaned daily.

You see your labor building?
500k chickens can produce about 300-400k eggs per day.

1-2 chickens are called pets.

Since I’ve been researching seafood supply for a Shrimp/seafood carry out I may open, seafood farming us way disgusting in some places, especially shrimp farms. There are organizations that check in some for standards, how Whole Foods get theirs. Farmed shrimp in store? Question it, look for certifications. Some bootleg farms feed their shrimp bird crap.

In many cases wild seafood usually has more flavor and healthier.
Con about wild us mercury buildup in your body. Don’t eat it every day, it will dissipate.

Off subject; Wild Spot Shrimp/Pawns from cold waters like Alaska is the best you’ll ever get within the USA.

I have black sex links. Per online says estimated 18 weeks from hatch to be ready to lay eggs. They will be in a fenced in coop. Hopefully the hens are quiet enough to not turn the neighbors into karens

We have chickens behind us..at 1st it was annoying but got used to it..

Would rather hear that then some rap bass thumping out of a neighbors house into my living room..

Heard it takes a year to get full size eggs

Might want to keep those "black sex links" to yourself lol

Had a guy 2 blocks from my house yesterday, rattling my windows for about 30 minutes with some heavy duty bass. He finally stopped. :rock

I’d rather listen to a dentist drill and a done nashing tooth extraction than 1 sec of rap.

We have chickens all over the neighborhood. We live out where our homes are very spread out. We also have an estimate 140 to 160 wild Mallard ducks. They just choose to stay year round in our neighborhood

Trying to get on that level! Just wife and I...2-3 chickens should be plenty...we don't plan on eating them...not any where close to starving to start personally killing things. That's just me though.

Is there anything better than good fried chicken? Maybe a ribeye steak cooked to medium rare perfection.

I'm not knocking vegetarianism. Just so long as you stay in your box.  :D

Of course if you eat eggs you aren't a vegetarian, or a vegan. Unless they're fertilized. I dunno, is there a difference?

Anyone who eats animals oughta go hunting at least once in my opinion. Embrace your inner carnivore.

Chicken fried rib-eye wrapped in bacon.
