Favorite Foreign Language Word
« on: September 27, 2025, 10:20:52 PM »
I studied German for 2 years in high school.  There were many great words, but a Spanish word later in life took its place.

Tortuga.  Turtle.

I pronounce the word in a deep voice.  That makes it very commanding and scary.  It gives the impression of a mother using that word to scare her children into doing their chores or the Boogeyman will get them.

Lèche-cul I believe is a French compliment.

Joy... in cambodia means either help ... or umm intercourse, the difference in pronunciation is very subtle.

Also going to a sports game when they play the Happy happy JOY JOY song with someone from cambodia is awesome to watch.

Smörgåsbord.

The Swedish word consist of three parts: Smör=butter, gås=goose and bord=board/table. Smörgås means bread and butter, or more widely understood a sandwich. Originally it meant just a lump of soft butter small enough to cover a slice of bread. Those small lumps resembled tiny geese. And soon enough the nickname covered both the butter and bread. But on a smörgåsbord there's rarely neither available or at least they're playing a very small side role.
