JU88 in combat
I had been on patrol with two of my companions when a large gaggle of Ju 88s attacked the harbour. We chased them out to sea and on my third attack on one of them it blew up. While I was firing this burst I became aware of an almost unbeliveable occurence - one of the doomed crew's comrades tried to come to their aid by attacking me from behind, and in doing so showed extaordinary courage. I had not expected such audacity, and only first became aware of the attack when my aircraft jolted and I saw a large hole in the right wing. Also, damage was done to my aircraft's pilot system, depriving me of airspeed indication. I immediately turned to my assilant, and after a few tight turns I was in a good position to send him a long burst from my guns. I saw pieces break off the aircraft and it went into a dive, emitting black smoke.
Just at that moment I caught sight of another Ju 88 within good range, and turned towards it. The pilot of that bomber made very determined attempts to evade me, displaying great skill, but it was an uneven match and soon I had him in my sights and pressed the firing button. There were a couple of bangs and that was all - the guns were empty! There, by the grace of God, went one lucky German.
