This is a pretty easy one.

What is the fastest speed aircraft in the world? For the sake of argument, lets exclude the space shuttle and any type of space vehicles.

I think the fastest air-breathing aircraft are the MiG-25 "foxbat" and the MiG-31 "foxhound". I think they can do Mach 3.5+
Yeah but in non air-breathing the X-15 wins hands down.......:D

mig 25pd 'foxbat-e': 3.000km/h+, equals mach 2.83 (with external fuel tanks) @ 43.000 ft - "max cruising speed at height: mach 2.35"

mig 31a 'foxhound': 3.000km/h, also mach 2.83 @ 58.000 ft (no external payload) - "max cruising speed at height: mach 2.35"

sr-71a 'blackbird': 3.500km/h, equals mach >3.2 @ 85.000 ft (no external payload) - "max cruising speed at height: 3200km/h / mach 3+"

Think both the Mig 25 and Mig 31 have higher speeds then that, they were both designed intercept the SR-71, the figures I've seen for them says Mach 3+.

Still, SR-71 may very well be the fastest, wouldn't surprise me if it is.

SR71 Cruises at mach 3.

She's been seen approaching Mach 4 on multiple occasions :)

The *true* top speed is still very much classified.

The MiG-25/31 was actually built to intercept the nuclear bomb threat (from Alaska and Europe) quickly, at high altitude, and efficently (loaded with the biggest missles the Russians had in the inventory).   Basically a Russian Air Force's version of the American F-14 Tomcat (designed to take out the Bear threat at long range and high altitude with her Phoenix missle salvos).

109 had and held the speed record for piston engined planes untill 1969. It set that speed record in 1939 I belive.

Not quite - if I recall correctly, the record-holding plane was designated as ME-209 and had some superficial similarities in appearance to the 109, butz that was done mostly for propaganda purposes (to show off what a great plane the 109 was). In reality, the 209 was a completely new design that had little in common with the standard 109 (completely new airframe, different wing shape, different engine etc.)

ok... here's one....

The Foxbat was designed to intercept the B-70 bomber... the US scratched it and left the foxbat without a mission that a cheaper more easily maintained aircraft could handle. Also, that speed could be achieved by the uber migs... but had to have the engines replaced when it came home
