Laser Squad Nemesis

It is a turn based, X-COM style player vs. player online game, developed by the brothers who developed X-COM.

$15 for 6 months might well be worth it.

If anyone is going to get involved, lemme know, because I think I might give it a try, and I'll need someone to fight!

Too cool.  I read about LSN a couple of months ago and totally forgot about it.  I will download it and give it a go.  Although I use AOL as my ISP and it seems that because of that some of the file transfer stuff has to be done manually.  Will have to see.

Cheesy name, but ill try it! X-Com went to HELL with X-Com 2 and beyond.. corporate worms grrrrrrrr!!!!

I dont like the oval shaped megaman-like graphics in this new game, the original X-Com art was so PERFECT.

I still play X-Com 1 .. and have a blast winning with only the human weapons (up to laser tech research, screw the rest) :)

Do you play just the human weapons on the most difficult setting?  If so I'm impressed.

I guess it is possible...but I guess you must be saving and re-loading an awful lot.  Once you get to the really big ships it is tough to even exit the shuttle on the hardest setting.
Some will fall in love with life and drink it from a fountain that is pouring like an avalanche coming down the mountain

XCOM is one of my all time favorites also. In fact the other day my wife brought up XCOM when I was trying to get her to play AvP2. She use to love to watch me play XCOM. Her favorite part was the Sectoids. She thought they were cute and liked the sound they made when you blasted them. :) She wanted me to play it but it won't run on XP. :(

I picked up LSN but I haven't tried it yet. I didn't realize there was no single player to the game. It's only play-by-email...blah. Someone could make a forture if they took the original XCOM, sup'ed up the graphics a bit and made it to run in Windows. Heck, even add a multiplayer feature. :)

Tac, you're right about how it went downhill with XCOM 2 and later. Why can't they leave well-enough alone.

Have you guys tried Fallout Tactics?  Raub, LJKVR and I have all really enjoyed that one - it is a different setting, but the turned based gameplay is similar to X-COM, and ressurrected alot of the same enjoyment I got from X-COM.

You can set it up to be real time, or turned base, which is real time until the first bullet is fired, at which point it automatically engages turn based mode.

Ah yes, XCOM. The best single player game ever produced, IMO.

While that new online game sounds like fun, I don't think it can ever replace the sense of wonder I got when I first played the original. There's nothing like starting into a game and realizing you've discovered an instant classic.

It had the coolest damn music too... playing some of those missions late, late into the night with the lights out... that music could start to screw with your head pretty good. :)

Wow you're right. I can hear that music in my head now. That game was great in so many ways. I remeber playing the demo when it first came out and knew this game was for me.

The human rifle and laser have the best effect vs aliens. Also have the better accuracy.

The rifle AP rounds penetrate the alien's armour..something thats vital when you fight the Mutons and the Elerians (them wear armour or thick hides!). And the laser rifle is better than the plasma weapons when dealing with any other alien and the alien tanks (Reapers and that flying disc).

I must admit though, the Heavy Launcher is the one thing I do use... its just so.. so... tempting! :)

Plus you can use the money you save to buy yourself the best bases and an unholy number of troopers & ammo for them.

Think ALLIES: Cheaper, more, accurate :D

Wow... I never thought of using the rifles as soon as I got Plasma weapons... they are better, eh?

I might need to reinstall :)

IMO xcom1 is one of the best ever games that ive played. Its graphics are still very good, theyre functional and it just makes you smile when you set the fields burning around a lone sectoid..Ahh, the destructable objects, sounds, music...Just perfect.
I would want THAT for multiplay, like different xcom companies competiting with eachothers! Those LSN graphics look little too clean and boring, but i think i give it a try.

Did they ever release a version of XCOM that was native to Win9x?  I have tried the old DOS cersion and I simply can't get it to run properly no matter what utility programs I use.

Yeah, the heavy launcher was cool.  Nothing like setting those waypoints to go through the door of the big saucer up several floors, down the hall and out the side, just hoping to run into something. Mwahahha

The one stunt I learned about a few years ago was to buy a ton of scientists and engineers, and have them work at two facilities -- keep at each facility enough housing for twice as many employees.  On the last day of the month, suspend projects and ship those slobs across the world.  You don't pay salary on guys in transit.
Yeah, they knew what htey were getting into when they signed up.  Besides, they WANT to save the world.  Give 'em all a shiny medal when they finish.
