It's an admittedly crude suggestion for an Ace's High nntp server. Some prefer it to UBB (not as clumsy: easier attachments, speed, not having to dig through a 100 post thread to get to the latest post). Right now this is the only hangout. Options are being considered through an *unofficial* sponsor but I don't know if everyone here would be comfortable utilizing it or not. Nothing definate.

Hey, I like this board... I don't find it hard to use.  Could you still 'wade' through all the posts if you wanted to, or would you only be able to read the latest one?

Most newsreaders give you the option of keeping all messages viewable or only the unread ones.

I'm not even saying that UBB is "hard" to use. It just seems a little bit clumsier and can be easier to miss a message that may have been useful ... when you're used to the speed and convenience of a newsreader.

For instance, you could probably keep abreast of 3 or 4 topical newsgroups in half the time it would take to bop back and forth among all of the discussion boards offered here. You can mark threads and specific messages to be highlighted or ignored. You can mark individuals to be highlighted or ignored. Attachments are a simple matter of click and browse (if the file is on your machine) or cut and paste (if it isn't) and need not have a remote host (although if this is enabled it could cause problems if the NG members aren't careful).

It's just a preference some have over UBB. I don't mind utilizing both, it's just a bit more cumbersome.

Urchin, you can do what you please with NNTP, it "works like Email".

We've all got a built in newsreader, with IE it's called Outlook express, Netscape's is built into the browser.

Configureing it can be as simple as clicking on a link.

It's true that some people may have NTTP (or is it NNTP?) access blocked from work, which is why I hope (and I'm sure of) HTC will always keep the UBB going, but it can be mirrored to both, and NNTP (or is that NTTP) really is sooo much better.

Some features:

Threads can be sorted

Read posts can be ignored (or not..)

Certain posters or threads can be blocked (from your end)

threads can be down loaded to be read offline (not so important in these cable days, but of significance to modem users)

Threads or posters can be highlighted for attention

Forwarding

Attachments

Speed

Flexibility.

spilchakers (Hitech, you reading this?)

And I'm sure there's more.

I want to be able to spam this board from my work too so NNTP is out of question.

Wanna see new threads only? Try Daily Topics.

I happen to think that the BSing back and forth on the newsgroups (in this case, web based message boards) is as an important part of the game as anything that's actually *in* the game.

UBB is very clunky, slow, and it's easy to miss replies.

Not to mention very wasteful of bandwidth.  Every time I want to check a response, I have to re-download every message posted to the thread, again, and again, and again, and again.

On the other hand, when I fire up my newsreader (I've got a gooooood one, too, Gnus running on XEmacs) it checks *all* my newsgroups, and tells me the ones that have unread messages.  Then when I go to the newsgroup (simple tap on the spacebar), my newsreader downloads all the messages for me automatically (since I have it set that way) so I don't have to click and wait, click and wait wait, click and (ohhh a heated discussion here, think I'll go fix a snack--ok, I'm back) wait wait wait wait.  Instead of the waiting, even while my newsreader is downloading, I have to do nothing but tap the spacebar to read through the whole newsgroup.

If it were an NNTP board rather than a UBB board,  you could killfile Arlo.

God knows the rest of us have.   ;)

ok, i'll deviate from my normal happy-go-lucky character here.

I do not understand why the concept of 'HTC does things differently' is so hard to grasp.

New players to this game usually keep a very low profile for a while, but in the last week I've watched the AW crowd come in make noise about almost everything that we do different here in Aces High. What, is what we've had for 2 years not good enough for all you sim experts?

Time to get the picture most of us have been drawing in bright colors for ya - you're not in kansas anymore, and things here are done a little differently. Instead of griping about it and advocating for it to be done 'your way', why don't you just conform?

I usually don't like to post anything that will hurt or offend people, but some of the AW guys have offended me by their attitude towards a game I'm pretty happy with. 'Change this, change that' - well, what if I dont wan't it to change? I like the way scenarios are done, I like this message board, and I like this company.

I think it's time for some of you to get off of your high thrones you were given in that 'other sim' because it means jack s**t here. Your ability to be taken seriously and respected in this community is not connected in any way with your years of experience in another.

I'm not saying that you're bad people, but you have to come off a little less condescending to veterans of 'this' community. There were 3 lifeboats from which to choose from when AW went down. You chose AH but I bet a dollar no one in the other two would feel any differently. We are not the Carpathia, you are not 1st class passangers off the Titanic. You're new players and no longwinded post will change that fact.

A year down the road if you want to squeak at the CM team, perk points, 'how this community isn't for you', the ubb, lazs, htc, or this ubb, feel free and I bet people will take you about 100% more seriously then we do now.

Just a quick note...

The ex-AW'er guys didn't just come here and decide to pick on the UBB forum because it was different, or something.

You should've seen the uproar when Gamestorm (the company we played AW through) decided to ditch the NNTP-compatible boards they were using for something else.  Although it took them awhile, they finally decided that going back to supporting NNTP was a worthwhile thing to do.  But bless their hearts, they never could get it right after they messed it up the first time.

LOL, moose, I swear to COD I posted my last reply before I ever saw yours.  :)  I guess we were just psychically connected there for a minute.  :)

I've been flying AH for over a year now, and I think people take me *less* seriously now than they did in the beginning. :P

Hey AN,

I actually do take you seriously because you've been around, and I bet others do too.

You should be elected spokesperson for all the transfers until they settle in.  :)

Bravo Moose. Direct and to the point with no personal insults. Well said young man  :)

Let's hope some new folks read it and not take it as any kind of insult or slam.
