What is a Liberal?
« on: March 12, 2002, 10:49:07 AM »
Thought this was a good quote regarding this question.

"What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then the record of this [Democratic] party and its members demonstrate that we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal."

I'd like to quote my Father in law, who I might add, was a STAUNCH democrat until 1964..."I didn't leave the Democratic party, the Democratic party LEFT ME!"

Of course, I only see what he posts here and what he does in the MA.  I know virtually nothing about the man.  I think its important for people to realize that we don't really know squat about each other.... definately not enough to use words like "hate".

A Liberal is someone who wants to control your public life.  A Conservative is someone who wants to control your private life.

Your Liberal of September 14, 1960

is

Your Conservative of March 12, 2002

while

Your Liberal of March 12, 2002 would be considered a communist in 1960

different times - comparing apples and oranges

John F. Kennedy:
"The quality of American life must keep pace with the quantity of American goods. This country cannot afford to be materially rich and spiritually poor."

"Dante once said that the hottest places in hell are reserved for those who in a period of moral crisis maintain their neutrality."

"It is increasingly clear that no matter what party is in power, so long as our national security needs keep rising, an economy hampered by restrictive tax rates will never produce enough jobs or enough profits."

"...there is always inequity in life. Some men are killed in a war and some men are wounded, and some men never leave the country, and some men are stationed in the Antarctic and some men are stationed in San Francisco. It is very hard in the military or personal life to assure complete equality. Life is unfair."

"Our success will be measured by the answers to four questions: First, were we truly men of courage? Second, were we truly men of judgment? Third, were we truly men of integrity? Finally, were we truly men of dedication?"

"And so, my fellow Americans. . .ask not what your country can do for you. . .ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world. . .ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the Freedom of Man. "

Is that the same Kennedy whose father BOUGHT him the presidential nomination.

Who built the model, for betraying our allies.  In the Bay of Pigs mess.

Whose sexual escapades in the White House, made clinton look like a monk.

Who began the escalation in Vietnam.  And whose policies LBJ followed with disastrous results.

Whose dabbling in politics, nearly ended life as we know it. On this planet.

Ya. Id say that was a liberal.

Excellent paraphrase by Jack, ;) do you know who said it first? Quote follows.

"In the great fulfillment we must have a citizenship less concerned about what the government can do for it and more anxious about what it can do for the nation."
