Two prototypes were built in total between June and August 1945, before the entire project was cancelled due to the end of the war. The first prototype was completed by the beginning of August 1945 and on Tuesday 7 August, made it's maiden flight (one day after the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima). Four days later, the same aircraft had a serious accident with it's RATO packs. This caused a suspension in the testing programme whilst the second prototype was being built. At the same time, the assembly lines were occupied by 18 other Kikka aircraft in various stages of production. At the end of the war, the Allies found that the Kikka was not to be limited to just one version. Nakajima had in preparation a two-seater training version without armament, a similar reconnaisance variant, and a third, single-seat, interceptor version. The latter was to be armed with two 30 mm cannons and fitted with Ne-130 or Ne-330 type engines with 900 kg (1,986 lb) and 885 kg (1,953 lb) thrust respectively.
