Vid Card Questions
« on: March 24, 2002, 01:10:46 PM »
I have just purchased and installed an nvidia geForce2 MX400 with 64 megs vid ram, manufactured by PNY Technologies.

While it definately upped my FPS while online, ( went from an average of 6 to 8 fps to an average of 25 to 28 fps ), I do have some things I need help with.

1st, should my FPS while in offline mode be the same as, greater than, or lower than, online FPS ??  I ask, because when I fly in offline mode, I am getting low fps, on average 11 to 13 fps, well below what I get while flying in online mode.

2nd,  Do I need to do any adjustments to the Direct3D or Openglide settings for Aces High ??  I am a novice at these two, as I have never had a 3D vid card before.

3rd,  what Driver/s should I be looking for, and trying to use ??

My system is as follows :

Intell Celeron MMX 400 CPU
Nokia Multigraph 447X 17" Monitor
I currently have 224 megs of Ram
gf2 MX400 w/64 megs vid ram, PCI card (old MB, no AGP slot)
Win 98 se
8 gig hard-drive
DirectX 8.1
TM Top Gun Afterburner Hotas USB Joystick
Creative Modem Blaster External Serial Port V.90 modem
Onboard C-Media Sound Card

I'm not sure if I need to list anything else for information, please ask if I left something out.

BTW, I do Defrag and clean My system registry about once a week, and run msconfig to clean up my startup menu and get rid of all the TSR's that get installed.  Normally, My system says it is 92% free on boot up, and goes to about 86% once I have connected to the Internet.

My sincere Thanks to any that may be able to assist me.:)

You didn't mention what resolution and color depth you are trying to run.  That's a pretty old processor so I wouldn't expect it to perform very well.

That CPU is not going to have enough gas to push that video card to the limit.  You would need twice the CPU speed to even get close to working the video card.

Put another way, you got more than enough video card, now you need the CPU to make it do its job well.

Desktop resolution is set to 1024x768, 32 bit Hicolor.

In game resolution is currently set to 1024x768, 16 bit color, unlimited FPS, enable MipMapping, Disable Paletized Textures.

Going to a lower resolution does not seem to make any significant difference.

Thank You for the replies.

Ok, that sounds reasonable.  Your problem is CPU as Skuzzy mentioned.  Try 32 bit color and see if it's very much slower.

Try it at 1280 x 1024,both 16 and 32 bit.You might be surprised...Geforce II's and up are optimized for higher resolutions and color depth.

Just a thought...Celerons overclock very nicely if the system is decently cooled...
