Your Favorite Mission Types & Plans
« on: July 31, 2001, 12:19:00 PM »
Nefarious' thread and the conversation I was having with Ripsnort got me thinking about this.  I thought I would open a thread to capture your favorite mission types and mission plans for those who like to plan missions.  The goal is to help some of us newer planners have a bucket of ideas we can go to for missions.

So tell us about your favorite types of missions, the plan for the mission, and how the mission is executed.

E.g.- saw a post from Hangtime not too long ago about capturing a number of bases in sequence using a flight of 6 B-26's, CAP on adjacent fields + taking out fuel at adjacent fields.  What does the plan for these types of missions consist of?  How many flights?  What is the load out?  How is this mission executed?

I'd like to share, but its proprietary info within VMF-323 only.  Sounds kinda korny, but if I shared, then everyone would be doing it...I have one particular mission that is 37-1 in successfulness.(the one time it was not successful, the lone goon disco'd just as he touched down)  I don't like to give that kind of info out...however....

My favorite type of missions are all one country-type aircraft, ie, British jabo's, Japanese Jabo's, etc.  Another is, AR234 raids with TA152 escorts, those can be real fun!

ANY NOE mission. :)  Ya, most die, but damn, that will really get your awareness up!

I allways liked the large Jabo/field capture missions Zigrat used to run back in the good 'ol days.  Also deep strat b17 raids into enemy territory with heavy fighter escort are great fun too if a little harder to put together and coordinate.  :D

Understood Ripsnort.  Not asking for anyone to share stuff they want to hold close to their chest.  No offense taken by not sharing  :).

Now to the missions stated so far, tell us more about them please.

E.g.- NOE Lancs & Tempests raid on large fields- how many lancs, load outs, what are their targets, etc?  How many Tiffies do you bring/ # of flights and what is the load out?  Are all assigned to AAA?  Do some fly CAP?  Do Lancs and Tiffies hit field at the same time? etc.

E.g. Amphibious assault- how many LVT's? escort craft?  Fighter CAP?  Jabos?

E.g. Zigrat's Jabo field captures- how many flights of aircraft?  What types? etc.

Personally, for jabo's, if a plane can carry 1k bombs, I load them, whether they hit AA or Hangars, the reason being is alot of newbies join missions, since they're not too good at hitting with bombs, just a near miss with a 1k bomb will take out acks, or soften hangars..and, if all targets are down, 1k's are damn good cockroach killers (GV's).

P47D is best Jabo A/C IMO, carrys a big load, followed by the F4U-1D or 1C. Both can take an ack hit or 3 and keep flying (good old radials, like Verm sig says.."Inlines are for Nancy boys...hehehe)  Check out my training films in the link in my siggy below, download the F4U-1D jabo film, basically, you only need one plane to take down a field to prep it for capture, but in todays world, its  important to kill hangars as well...

Incidently, if you ever want a real lesson in jabo, join as an observer with Blitz sometime, that guy is friggin' unbelievable, can take out all ack in two passes, without taking a ping, in a P51D.  He's VMF-323's only MOH recipient.

The insane "100+ C-47's w. 3 P-51 escorts mass drop"

Historically correct (no not anally retentive historically correct) missions with Krautplanes.

Historically correct (no not anally retentive historically correct) missions with Commieplanes.

Not too many plane varieties!  It sucks when we have 2 Il-2, 3 Yak 9u, and 27 La-7.  Max two types!

LOL bigUC!  I haven't seen that one yet- the mass C-47 raid.  Might have to try that mission some time.

It use to be fighter sweeps with killer turn fights at 3k in SpitV's.  That darn 109G-10 is growing on me big time though.  Now it's a G-10 turning with ponys at 15k  :)

You pony jocks know who you are LOL

Rip: we all know your secret:

1) Send Blitz in. Wait .2 seconds, and all acks will be dead.

2) Send 15 vulchers in. Kill StSanta on the runway 3 times, then laugh at him on ch1. Watch outburst of profanity

3) Vulch for a good 15 minutes. Laugh at Santa

4) Goon the place
