Bridges
« on: March 29, 2002, 01:34:00 PM »
Saw a film posted by HBlair in the ahfilm forum... it was well done.

One subtle thing in it... the presence of bridges.

I'd really like to see bridges creep back into the scenery.  Anyone know what the major concerns as to why they wouldn't be allowed?  Potential framerate hit possibly?

I can't imagine it'd be a framerate hit.  Bridges have been around in online sims for ages.  Perhaps the AH terrain editor just doesn't have the right objects available?

There were some terrain editor threads where people were messing with bridges, but I'm too lazy to find it.  Seemed like the holdup was getting them to be all of: killable, drive overable, fly underable, road topped.

Ah... seems like 3 of the 4 would be easy to accomodate.  That 4th is a tough one though.

Any map designers know if this was overcome... can we expect to see some bridges in upcoming maps?

Hmmmm

Pilot: HT, we need bridges.
HT: Ok,..we can do that visual, no problem.  Only a few polys needs really.
Pilot: HT, we want to be able to blow them up.
HT:  Ok,...more code for the collision system,..we need object status too, and we will need some flags to control what has been blown up.
Pilot:  HT, what good are bridges unless we can drive across them?
HT:  Dang,..well,..uhmmm...ok,..special terrain object.
Pilot:  And HT,..we need roads over the bridge too.
HT:  Ok,..need to modify the road system so it knows it can go across a bridge object.
Pilot:  HT,..why can't we fly under the bridge?  Every time I try I blow up.
HT:   Modify the bridges so we do not have any polys underneath them.  Yes, I know we have to redesign them for that, but thats what they want.  Yes, I know I have to redo the collision system again for it.

2 weeks later:

Pilot:  HT, why dont we have that new plane we asked for 3 weeks ago?
HT:    I need a drink.

Seriously all of this was being worked on by people with the editor months ago, with some promising (but not complete at the time) results.  Search for bridge in the terrain editor forum.

Skuzzy.. this is something non-htc people were working on.  I saw a bridge in a vid and was wondering if any of them would like to comment on it.  Take it easy.

Smileys wouldn't help skuzzy.  It was totally out of context.  Seems to be pretty typical for the bbs these past few days.

Well,..my apologies Deja.  Did not mean to side track anything, just had that dialog running through my head, thought it was funny, and posted it.
I didn't view it as a hijack and did not mean to ruffle anyones feathers.  I just thought it was funny.  Obviously, it was only funny in my head.

I usually try to get things to lighten up in the General Forum Deja.  Sometimes it gets too serious.  If this were posted in the Technical Forums, I woul have responded very differently.  Not to infer this is the wrong Forum, I just view the General Forum in a different perspective.

No disrespect intended.

I made the bridge, I can comment or show you the bridge in H2H.
What would you like to know???

HiTech and I talked about the bridges, and there are a few annomilies (sp) So He made the choice to remove them at this stage of the game. Without going into so much detail, I would have to agree why HiTech did not want my bridges at this time. One slite problem can turn into a few thousand nightmares for HTC, So at this stage I would totally agree with him.

I'm sure that bridges will come to AH someday and be a welcomed addition. I remember when land and water didn't transition. HiTech and all the crew have given us a top notch Sym, and it has changed so much since it's first release, I look forward to the furture. It only gets better.

Now to seriously answer your question.  I think the bridges done in any of the current maps is basically some very talented people who found a way to give the impression it is a bridge.

I can see how this would be done.  To make them officially objects in the game is another story.  For instance, the ones players make today cannot be destroyed and probably cannot be flown under (could be wrong, but I believe this to be true).  I am not sure if they could actually be driven over.  As part of the terrain, they may support vehicles over them.

To make them part of the game in the light of being able to destroyed, flown under, and to support trains/roads as they are today, would require the bridge to be designed as an object in the game, much like hangars and such, but a bit more complex to do.
Doing this could cause frame hits and some other anomalies when they come into view.  Obviously, the current convoy and train system would have to be changed to be aware of "broken" paths in thier transit code.  Options then would be to find another path to the destination, or to stop running.

Overall, quite a bit of effort would be required to get them in the game and make them useable in the manner most people would expect.

I totally agree with his view on things like that too.

Its still too bad... the brief glimpse looked pretty cool.

So... are you giving up on them for the time being?  Its always fun to impose on someone else that's doing all the work.;)

Thanks for making the effort Nuttz... woulda been sweet had it worked out.
