I think the Israelis did it. And they get a big fat for it too. Somehow, the Israelis seem to be the only ones with balls enough to pull stuff like that off. Its like the F-16 strike on the Iraqi nuclear powerplant back in 81 was it? If they hadnt done that, Saddam would have had nukes in 91...something that undoubtedly would have made Desert Storm much more interesting...

Israel and WTFG!!!

...Boroda scratches the back of his head and wonders: why didn't Russians start bombing everyone in sight because we became "victims of terrorism" in 1999?...

Couldn't it be fine to start with Albania, then return Serbian refugees to Kosovo and cheer every accident on any factory proucing Tomahawk missiles - a weapon of international terrorism? Damn, we suffered from planned terrorist attack, and Shamil Basayev was seen in Albanian terrorist camp!

For the record, you guys did reintroduce hostilities to Chechnya at the time. While there are those in the US who dissagreed with the Russian response (In fact some policy people I spoke with at the time, not to mention Academics  believed that it was not Islamic sepratists, but rather the KGB who blew up the apartments in Moscow   ) I was never one of them. The fact is, Russia responded as the United States has. They targeted those responsible for the actions, and began a campaign against them. The major difference I can see is scale. Larger attack on the WTC=larger response. The situations are not that different in my eyes. Hopefully the reports of Human Rights abuses at the hands of US soldiers in Afganistan will be significantly reduced compared to what has come out of Chechnya.

[edit] and yes, I do think that those who dispise the US, for whatever reason, would cheer an explosion at a Raytheon plant.

Tell me Sikboy, did the US forces in Afghanistan use artillery against Kabul?

Chechnya is NOT Afghanistan and neither is the response of the 'wronged' state.

Sure there are Islamic terrorists in both countries responisble for particular atrocities, but that's about all they have in common.

But the US response was reasonable, measured and arguably justified.

The Russian response was indescriminate and reminiscent of the heavy handedness of the Soviet Union.

Terrorism should be attacked by all means. But to take innocent lives in the process should be avoided at all costs, not simply disregarded as a neccessary evil.

Yeah, European nations NEVER commit acts of sabotage or terrorism right?

roadkill

And one difference between the ragheads and the USA. Military targets are usually at the BOTTOM of the ragheads list.

No, and we didn't level it from the air either. This is an interesting thing that happens when you have so many people talking about so many things from so many angles... I agree with you Dowding. But I didn't mention these things in my post because I was trying to win over Boroda by pointing out the similarities in how Russia reacted to the Moscow appartment bombings, and how the US reacted to the WTC and Pentagon Attacks.  My intention  was not served by pointing out the differences between the campaigns. In my opinion, that would just open up another argument, and I would have rather stayed with one at a time.

PS: if anyone is interested in the conflict in Chechnya, with a Historical background, I wrote a paper on it last year. It's available on the webpage in my profile.
