Questions on the Typhoon
« on: April 06, 2002, 01:22:21 AM »
I wonder about this plane. I just started flying it and I really love it.

Anyone have any tips on this plane. Seems like it is a decent B&Z plane and it can also mix it up a bit.

Just curious on peoples thoughts and feelings toward this ride.

Plus would you reccomend this ride to a semi-newbie?

Keep it fast, very fast.

It's not that great at altitude, I never bother going higher than 20K.

It takes a while to get up to top speed in level flight, and you're better off leveling out early to get at the fight at top speed than extending the climb and arriving at the fight maybe 3K higher and maybe 100 MPH slower.

It does turn better than most people seem to expect, especialy at speed, but it won't do it for long. If you haven't got the kill in the first circle, dive away and then come back for a second try, don't get tempted to pull one more circle for the kill.

I set convergence on the primary pair of guns quite a bit longer than the other pair specificaly for ack straffing  - no need to fire all four at ack.

Rockets don't seem to unbalance the plane much, nor affect top speed noticeably. If you find they do, you're probably flying it a bit too much like a Spitfire - stay faster.

While not a terrific steady state climber, it *is* a terrific zoomer - nothing will catch you going up hill at high speed, and if you're gentle, it's controllable at surprisingly low speeds at the top of the loop.

I think it's a good plane for a newbie - fast, stable and packs a big punch. It's only real weakness is poor roll rate at speed.

I like it :)

It's a good plane, pretty easy to fly and can run from ALMOST anything down low (where most fights are).
Exelent guns as you've probarly noticed. Best way to use the guns IMO are to fire just 2 at a time, ammo will last alot longer and you still pack one hell of a punch.
It turns good although it's got a nasty snapstall, not much warning between good turning and full stall/spin. Turn slightly better then a 4 gunned 109 A5 though.
Great B&Z plane and use it like that, although it turns good it can't mix it up with spitfires and such so stay fast (it's really really good in high speeds).

You've got the idea of it already pretty good freom what I read in your post. Good B&Z that can mix it up is what it is and although slow roll rate, it's one of the best planes to learn to E fight in.

Thanks guys. Sounds like after flying it for a week or so I was able to pretty much get the idea. Only thing I need to work on is not using both sets of guns and rely on just a set at a time.

Again thanks

Of course you can use both sets of guns at the same time, most people do, but you get a perfect effect with just two of them aswell, and ammo lasts longer.

If you attack a buff, I sugest you use all 4, both because it kills it faster and because you will hit more :)

Keep it FAST, stay away of turnfights, watch your fuel! Personaly I have different convergency settings on inner and outer pair of cannons and im using them depending on the target distance... Works for me... ;)

If you learn to master the Tyffie you are going to be a killer in da Tempest! Typhoon is freeware version of Tempest and Tempest is Mr. Death himself :D

An excellent B&Z plane with a big cannon punch. This plane lost its luster when the LA7 was introduced a while back.

You can expect to be jumped by every LA7 in the area due to the fact that the LA7 is even faster down low and hardly ever compresses. So, plan every B&Z you do in a crowded area to be headed towards friends in the event an LA7 sees your plane. That way your leading him down low into a bees nest of your buddies. Even a few close rounds from a friend will send him packing, and if he's smart he won't follow you into such a situation.

Plan Ahead

Biggest downside is that it bleeds E in turns worse than any fighter.  IMHO

I've allways been tunrfighting with her ... not a great way to have a  good score ... but I don't care of my score ...

Frost, fly any 190 and then tell us how the typh bleeds E in turns ...typh is probably one the bests turners at med and hi speeds, comparable to the spit. And an average turner at low speeds.

I disagree Mandoble after spending the almost all the last tour in D9.
If I end slow I just quick the WEP and voila I can escape easily...
I find  her more confortable and usable  than the Tyffi.

The only thing missing is the Jabo loadout of the Tyffi :(

Sure it is ;)  But I think that for turnfight in Typhie you need to have some skill in that plane... Actually I like to turn with it too and I already have been called a 'cheater' be few dead pony and other plane drivers who cried all over ch. 1 that there is 'absolutely NO way a Typhoon turns like that...' anytime it happens I have to land because im laughing so hard that SA is none xistant :)  Actually does anyone of you takes being called a cheater as an award? :) I do ;)

Note for RUSH:

If you want to learn to fly Typhoon ask Orel or maybe ? Vulcan ? for a training session. Im not sure about Vulcan but Orel is quite dedicated Tyffie driver and what he can do with that plane... He must be 'cheating' :D

Straffo, i think mandolbe doesnt doubt that the D9 is a good escaper.

He just wanted to express, that the FW190 bleeds E in turns (especially horizontal tur) even faster than the tiffie.

As i always say, if you move a FW190 to the left or right its like driving a car into a massive wall. You will deaccelerate pretty fast. :)

Edit: Yes Vulcan seems to spent some time in tiffie and as far as i can say, he doesnt exellent in it.

@MadBirdCZ : vulcan is a god in Tyffy
and the initial turn (at speed) in the Typhoon is great but after the first turn things are going bad :D
Stallfighting in Typhoon is thrilling and really fun but pretty bad for your score :D

@Naudet :

// warning : personnal opinion
// warning : no math nor proof in this post

Yep I agree with you 190 are not in the same ligue as the Spit .
When you are out of E in a Tyffi you are IMO in a worst shape than in a D9.
As the D9 accelerate better (IMO of course :))
