Night...
« on: April 19, 2002, 11:49:34 AM »
Simple premise, I like night, I wish there were more of it.

One of the reasons I like AH so much is that you aren't always flying around in the noon-day sun in a clear blue sky. You actually get overcast, dusk, and dawn and this will cause you to change your tactics accordingly. Night also allows you to do things that are extremely hazardous to your health in the daytime. i.e. Gooning, PT Raids on bases, flying a Lanc at less than 20k. etc.

Would it be possible to get at least 15 minutes of full night each day? I'd even put up with the full-moon every day thing. ;)

They turned off the night?  Kinda thought it was already there.  Sure as hell seems to be 30% of the times I log in.

Yup,

At present it seems to be going directly from dusk to dawn with no significant "night" in between.

probably just a marketing "test" :)

was thinking night would be better if the icon range dropped to short (the CT arena range) while it was dark

also need mannable searchlights with accompanying ack guns (like the 5" on the ships) at the bases - I'm sure this would be a cinch to program :)

Night is good.  Still, I avoid(ed) the MA when dark.

Nice.  Juuust nice.

I sure as hell hope you don't get your way, partly because I wish there were less night, but mostly, because I can see you have no respect for people who don't want to play the game your way.  Why else would you choose to belittle your detractors in advance?

Good idea, that would look pretty cool.   As for the type of ack an 88 would be nice.

Currently there is really only a second of actual night.  As soon as the sun finishes setting it starts rising again.  Every time I'm out of the tower (flying, gv, etc) I see a really brief flash of the screen when the sun switches to rising.

I'd personally like to see the night last a little longer, especially after we get the Widow :D

Maybe we could get HTC to install switchable lights on the planes for anyone who doesn't like being in the dark.

Actually, that said, some lighting in the hanger could be useful, sometimes you can't even see what ord you're loading or what your fuel is set at.

I like the night effect.  I'm still in my free period and haven't had as much experience as my squad mate -RY- but my library has 1 film and 1 film only and that's of a night fight I got caught in against a Hellcat when I was in a Spitfire IX.  The dogfight ended up on the deck and over an enemy airbase - without my even knowing it because I couldn't see the world outside!  It was probably the most harrowing and best dogfight I'll ever have in the Main Arena.  Every time I watch that film, I find something that I missed the last time - like how BURNM came down out of nowhere and cleared a LaGG off my 6 without my even knowing he was back there, and how I buzzed a panzer  and didn't even know it was there.  Glorious.  Simply glorious.

On the other hand, flying at night with no radar is the pits and not very much fun because it can be hard to locate the enemy.  Can't go attack something that can't be seen, and if you lose your radar after lift-off, you're pretty much just wasting time flying around.   I found the Hellcat by cruising along a flight path between my base and the closest enemy base with a red square in its sector.

I like the night effect and it certainly has its uses (such as running a CV group up against an enemy base or taking an ostwind to do some night strafing).  But for pure dogfighting action its a downer.  How about at least allowing fighters to retain their radar at night, or allowing aircraft that were historically used for night fighting to have radar?  (insert plug for P-61 Black Widow here).

Just some ideas to reach a compromise.
