No, not that.

I can't type. I use my two index fingers to do all my typing, with some occasional help from the bird fingers (when I'm really typing a good flame post) Am I the only one gifted with this talent? Is this a good or bad thing?

Do you have to look at the keyboard when you go key hunting?

It's easier and faster using all your fingers. I don't have to look at the keyboard when I'm typing and I type fairly fast.

I make a lotta mistakes though... but the pinky is great for speed-backspacing.

If you spend a lot of time on the computer you should learn to type.  

You can get a book or take a class or you can just do this:

Put your fingers on the home keys ( a-s-d-f, j-k-l-; )

Practice typing each row of letters on each hand, without taking more than one finger at a time off the home keys.

E.G.

q-w-e-r-t   then y-u-i-o-p
a-s-d-f-g  then h-j-k-l-;
z-x-c-v-b then n-m-;-,-.-/

Do that forwards and backwards until you can do it real fast without looking.

Then practice typing the alphabet forwards and backwards.
Do it until you can do it without looking at the keyboard and see how fast you can go.

BTW thumbs are for space bar and alt key.

Typing class was a requirement in my highschool.  I doubt many on this BBS ever have seen a real manual type-writer...I was able to pull off 70 WPM on a manual.

I remember back in highschool sitting through MR Gupta's typing class...ASDF...ASDF....ASDF.. .thinking to myself, my gawd this is boreing, when am i going to use this crap.  "back then our school didnt have much in the line of computers and I had no intrest in such things"  Sure  comes in handy though.


 i typed this sentance with 2 fingers and it took about 3 times longer than the above paragraph


 edit, even with 2 fingers i still make mistakes

The other benefit of knowing how to type quickly using all your fingers, is that you can use one hand in the middle of a dogfight to type something if you need to... don't even have to glance down.

Index fingers always rest on the f and j keys... most keyboards have risen dots or lines or something to indicate by feel that you are on those keys.

Ahh, the memories! Our Basketball coach was our typing teacher, he told us players "If you don't do 50 wpm in typing class, you're not getting much playing time!"...needless to say, we all did 50 WPM or better!

My introduction to my first computer was in 1977, and we did some mathematics on it, it came on two AV carts, one for the monitor, one for the box!

I'm a fast typer.
Back in the DOS days, with no GUI, you had to type your way everywhere. I dont remember learning it, its something gradual. Maybe like everything, its a harder skill to aquire when you are older.

My mom made me take typing in HS.  I protested vehemently but to no avail.  I insisted that my "hunt and peck" typing skills were faster than I could learn to type using touch typing, which turned out to be true at first.  I timed myself on a typing test using the 2 finger method, then using the newly learned touch typing method.  I could type about 33 wpm using 2 fingers only about 25 wpm or something like that using touch typing.  I got faster over time though, especially when I learned not to look at the keyboard or the screen, but only at whatever I was copying from for that assignment.  Gradually I got to where I could hit 70 wpm with few errors and thats about as good as I have ever been able to get.  This skill has been incredibly valuable to me though.  In college, I was so grateful, as I saved huge amounts of time and probably some money by typing my own term papers and assignments up, instead of paying a roomate or classmate to do so.  This skill continues to serve me well to this day.  You know what they say about Moms always being right, well its true...

I had to learn to type in the AF, on a manual.  Got to about 45 wpm on that clunker.

I used to have 2 guys that worked for me who were amazing to watch.  They both were incredibly fast.  Both were programmers and they used to race each other.

I finally got them to take a speed test, and they both nailed 120 wpm, consistently, with no errors.  I would have to replace thier keyboards once every couple of months though.  They complain about the debounce being too slow.

About the best I can muster these days is about 75 to 80 wpm.

Oh, and FYI, the average person talks about 37 wpm.
