Cool... I was in VF-191 in the mid-80's.
I take issue with the following statement found at
VF-191 Squadron History:
The VF-191 established on the 4th of December 1986 can claim the unit's name and markings but it did not have the heritage of the original VF-191.
It was far and away the best command I was ever assigned to. I dunno about the rest of you ex-military types, but if you ever had the pleasure of being part of a command where EVERYONE was either hand picked or chose to be there, you were indeed lucky.
Around Miramar, we called ourselves the "Hellcats" and it was printed on our ballcaps. Even in the first, year the Hellcats were setting maintenance records and getting far more flight time out of our old jets than some of the other squads with newer planes. We were all looking forward to receiving the F-14D and we we're slated to be one of the first west coast squads to get the new Tomcat.
Gawd we were cocky. Gawd it was fun... while it lasted.
Oh... IIRC, the Blue Angels became the Satan's Kittens. They never went to combat as the Blue Angels.
I believe this was the original patch:
My CO said that it was designed by Walt Disney. Not sure if that's true or not...
