Went out shooting yesterday...
« on: May 05, 2002, 02:28:47 PM »
I finally got around to sighting in my 7mm STW (8mm Magnum necked down for a 7mm round).  I went out with a friend.  I still have a little work and practice to do on my rifle... though I didn't know it until I shot some of these:

That's a .50 caliber custom made rifle.  Its single shot.. you pull the bolt out to load the next round in.  We were shooting at about 400 yards in 2" groups.  I'm trying to imagine what 6 of these going off would sound like and feel like.  Its difficult to do.

This is a model 700 that has been heavily modified.  The bull barrel houses a 300 Ultra Mag round.  The gun itself weighs about 20 lbs, but is suprisingly nice to fire.  I managed a 1/2" group at 200 yards with this one.. on the first 5 rounds I've ever fired with it.  Anyone ever fired a gun with a 1lb trigger pull?

Once you get started on AR-15s, you start to discover a whole new world is opened up.  You buy lower receivers and try to decide just exactly how much/little you want to put into it.  This one had a little more than average invested.

That .50 cal simply won't do in a school yard. That AR-15 shows promise, but you'll have to do some filing first.

i acually found a way to get the wife to acompany me to the guns show last sunday.

i let her know the week before that i was going, then on thursday or friday i started mentioning this .22 cal gattling gun built with ruger 10-22 actions with a rate of fire at about 3000 rpm.  not suprising that she decided to go with me to the show just to try to avoid that purchase;)

One of the wildest guns I have fired is a Lahti-39  20mm.

Dago, my grandfather took out a soviet sniper during second world war with that  gun.

Geez Wmaker, I would hate to think of what that would do to a person.

I shot it through a 3 inch steel block at 120 yards.  Splashed metal out on both sides.

Just about kicked me silly, knocked me back 6 inches.

Have heard its the largest shoulder fired weapon in the world.  Of course, it has to be staked into the ground prior to firing.

Yep Dago,

There was a prepared place for the gun and all but the position was unmanned. This sniper had shot 5 or so guys from my grandfather's company in one week's time. This was during the "trench war" phase of continuation war. This sniper made a mistake of not being careful enough when he went to his position and my grandfather spotted him going there. Then he just manned L-39 position and fired. His superior came shouting "what the hell were you doing shooting that gun off with no permission!". Grandfather said he used it to destroy a sniper in one position of the enemy trench. This officer took a periscope and looked (there was a big hole in the wood bloke of the trench wall and that position was all messed up) and said: "well, there won't be any shooting from that position anymore".

Man, I had a AR-15 H-Bar back a few years ago.  Brand new, only put about 500 rounds through it.  Truck died, needed many parts and the fella who my Dad reccomended as a mechanic was an avid gun collector.  Heard I had a nice Ar15 and offered to trade gun for the $1600 worth of work I needed done.

Sigh

Keep saying I'll buy another....just a Ruger 10-22 in the current aresenal.  "Expended" the 2 TOW missiles I'd acquired, but that's another long long story  :D   (Great tree clearing devices!)

1.  If there's one gun you should have in your "aresenal"... a 10-22 it is.  Just bought a new one a couple of weeks ago... fired that last Saturday too.

2.  Buy the Ar-15 one piece at a time.  The lower receiver is around $120 (that's the part that's tracked as a firearm) and the rest you can buy as components.  $20 here and $50 there and you can build it yourself over time.  Total investment would run around $550 and you will have built it yourself (very easy to do).

Stop calling them guns.....

That will be three times around the square with your rifle above your shoulders yelling, "I will not call my weapon a gun again" followed by 100 push ups!

At least that is what we had to do....

I was in the Airforce.  We didn't learn the "gun" vs "rifle" thing.  We were tought "briefcase" vs "attache".

BTW.. you know what you call a .50 cal?  Whatever it wants to be called. ;)

1)  The Ruger I've had since I was 14 (Im 32 now).  Its a joy to shoot, very accurate and, in the world of target shooting, inexpensive to feed ammo to.  I really wish I could find the 15/20/30 round magazines, that 10 round rotary just isnt enough.  My old onces started jamming and since Clinton banned high capacity clips, been stuck with the 10 rounder.  Its a fun gun, and seriously reduces the aerodynamic effiency of seagulls  :)

2) Where??  I've got to tell you, the local dealers here are expensive and I just don't know what to get.   Drop me an email (webmaster@checksix.net) if you have some links to places...I have no idea where to find this stuff, so any guidance is appreciated.
