Flossy, go fly a fighter for once.  :p

hehe, see, she gets harassed constantly.  :D

Just let her try it out.  So what if she's not any good.  How many of us starting from scratch were any good?  Some of us (me!) still aren't good after a year!   I haven't seen one instance of a female being picked on, harassed or even hit on in the text buffer.  I don't think she has a thing to worry about in that aspect.

Yeah, Nifty's always harassing me to fly a fighter!  I'm sure he just wants to see me spin in when I lose control.... or get shot down as I flounder around the sky with a big target on my back saying "Shoot Me"  :o

Exactly!  We all have to start somewhere - with varying degrees of success - but who cares anyway, as long as we have fun?  :)

Well, I certainly haven't ever been picked on (in fact guys tend to be very protective of me!  ;) ) - and the only times I get "hit on in the text buffer" is when I come online and say Hi to the arena!  Sometimes it takes me a good ten minutes to finish replying to all the greetings and able to concentrate on the game.... but I love it, and wouldn't want it any other way!  :D

Aub - my sentiments exactly

Flossy - thanks for all the advice.  (I told her about you and she thought that you were male until I remembered to include that one very important fact)  I'll make sure to pass it along.

lazs - one of these days we'll come to terms, but until then you may have to count on a two ship NOE formation from bishlandia deep into rookstan consisting of my Lancaster and her goon :p

popeye - gotta mix fun into the relationship sometime (or in my opinion, most of the time)

gunthr - GREAT IDEA... don't think her Mom would go for it.  She's not much of a tank driver.

mason - She would fly with me and prolly avoid the FDBs in every way except for .50s and 20mm's :D .

drex - ...no comment

krusher - good to hear its been done before.  thanks!

dtango - yes, they are sick

for the rest of you, thanks for chiming in...
If she does start flying it will be well after I join the AKs.  I'm assuming they'll take in a member after wedlock.  That being the case, you may (if I'm successful) see her on under the callsign:

Tell her that she will be among good company in the small minority. =)

If she does get harrassed (which I'm seriously doubting will happen) she can always hunt the bugger down and kill him repeatedly until he logs or shuts the hell up

she should probably practice a bit offline with no pressure until she gets the basics down. it can be frustrated coming into a flight sim filled with other people and expectations when you can't even fly yet.

Take it slow, make it fun. Teach her how to bait and taunt

have her read the boards to see what kinda people she'll be dealing with.

everyone is no good to begin with but once she makes that first kill she should be hooked like the rest of us. muhahahahah!

once she gets online, if she has any questions I've found that plenty of people are more than willing to help and that makes it a really nice atmosphere to do some killing. =)

Preon, I have flown a little over 2 years in War Birds prior to coming over to AH, and never suffered any harassment.  Prior to flying online with WB I flew several months offline. I had no idea what the onine experiece would be like, and I WAS worried about harassment issues. I didnt know anyone else at all that flew WW2 combat flight sims.

I also considered picking a non-obviously female handle, etc, but ended up thinking I'd rather just be myself - IF I get harassment I can always change my handle if I still want to fly the game anyway.  And so I began flying as -esme-  And you know what? I had precisely one definitely objectionable encounter in-game and that after about a year of playing online. I squelched the bugger as soon as he started offending me, and I never had any furtehr problems.

The bulk of the guys seem to be very protective in that if they hear of anyone harassing me simply for being female, they're likely to give the miscreant a very hard time on every encounter with them for a specified period of time. I've seen a few instances idiot big-mouths almost literally unable to fly due to being solidly vulched and even having their location broadcast to the other side(s) to HELP the enemy vulch them (in WB). Not only does it teach the miscreants to behave better, it also acts as a dire warning to those who might be inclined to misbehave.

Between squelch commands, the GOOD behaviour of the majority, and the fact one can complain to the owners of the game you're flying, I feel pretty safe in online flight sims now.  Yes, I've had some amiable flirting/gentle ribaldry aimed at me, but that's OK, the majority know sensible boundaries and keep to 'em.

As for your partner being worried about how good she is or isn't, I'm sure with your help, Preon, she'll become reasonably competent far faster than I was able to teching myself offline. And if she wants some online tuition, I'd be glad to help - I'm happy flying anything, as much realism as a PC game can throw at me, though I specialise in bombers, rather than fighters, but I can at least teach the basic handling in those, too.  And there's always "winging" in Ostwinds betwen times, that can be quite fun, as Flossy and I can attest!

Good luck, and here's hoping that AH gains another female aviator before long!

Esme (-esme- in WB, esmers in AH)
