Base Defense....tricks of the trade?
« on: May 09, 2002, 11:30:43 AM »
Ok when u see a lot of inbound cons and u want to contribute to u're country's war effort and try and defend the base instead of running to another spot on the map-what plane should u select?  Like what are the top 5 base defense planes and any general tips would be nice....like take off in the opposite direction and climb to 15k or whatever.  I'm pretty shure that the following planes are going to be included in most lists:

1) Me109 G-10
2) Zeke

I use the Spit IX ... this plane can get into the "action" immediately.

or

I up an La-7 and go goon hunting behind the attacking line. Shoot down the goon(S) and the attackers will usually loose their enthusiasm.

Take a perk plane and fly away from the area.  All the enemy fighters will see you and give chase.

;) ;) ;)

It depends, 28sweep, on whether I'm flying for score, for perkies, or just for the fun of the moment. Everybodys different, but heres what works best for me...

If you fly for score, but you still want to take off from a base under attack, I would choose a fast accelerator/fast top end plane, (G-10, 190D, LA-7, etc), level out low after gear up and extend out far enough so its safe to climb out. You may want to take only %25 fuel unless you are going after bombers. Then take %50.

If you fly just for the fun of the moment,  take off from a hanger with any low wing-loading plane, preferably a heavy hitter like niki, spit, Hurri, 109g-2, etc.

If the base is under heavy, heavy all-out attack you can anticipate that the red guys will not allow you to climb out unmolested. You know that with so many of them in the air, all you can do is turn, turn, turn. (You also know you it is highly likely that you will die.) For this I use the Hurri, zeke or the 109F. (I use the 109F, E or G-2 when I need perkies. The Emil is the best turning 109)

To avoid the vultures, go to the tower and watch the boomz and zooms for a minute, to time your take off when its most safe. Use the hanger if there are no bomb craters in front of it. Use flaps to get off a little sooner, and be ready to turn immediately.

Finally, give out every 6-call that you can for your buddies. If they haven't already been doing it for you, they will start. The 6 calls are key in base defenses.

G'luck. Die In Proud Defense of the Homeland :D

You could also try the AA guns or the vehicle hangar.

The most typical MA tactics of base capture are these two:

Capture by C-47s

1) Fighters storm the target field at low-mid altitudes with sweep/JABO role
2) About the time the furball is heated up, buffs arrive overhead the fighters and drop hangars.
3) Fighters finish off resistance and goon arrives.

Capture by M-3s

1) Ground vehicles spawn near target town and destroy the town.
2) When defenders are forced to up low alt anti-GV planes or Panzers to stop capture by M-3s, attacker air support arrives higher above and drops the VH.
3) When VH is down, attacking fighters attempt to storm the field and vulch, while ground armour column eliminates defending ground forces and slip M-3s in.

 .............

These two tactics are always made possible with superior numbers on part of the attacker.

Therefore, the best counter measure is the ones that buy time until the defending numbers increase, NOT THOSE WHICH ELIMINATE ALL ATTACKERS to the bitter end. The purpose of defense is literally to DEFEND, not chase a single enemy fighter clear across the sector. The dumbest move defending pilots make is greed: multiple planes going after a single enemy, while the rest of the attackers are approaching high loaded with bombs.

If the enemy attacks with the first tactic, look around and see if the defender role-balance is right. Usually dedicated buff hunters are low in numbers, while the guys who furball at deck alts know no shortage.

Grab a fast climbing plane and stay around 20k, patrol the perimeter of the base at about 75% throttle. I know it's a boring, lonely, unappreciated job, but that job is the single most important one when defending.

If the enemy attacks with the second tactic, it's a bit more complicated. You have to look around and check if there are sufficient number of friendly GVs, sufficient number of GV-hunters, and sufficient number of high alt air support. Usually there aren't many people who hunt GVs effectively. All people do is usually grab a Spit or an La-7, strafe incoming M3s and stroll off somewhere else.. when the rest of enemy Panzers and Osties smash through ground defenses. Grab a capable anti-GV aircraft.. P-38Ls or maybe F6F-5s.. P-47s are good too.

When enemy ground forces are neutralized, switch your plane to buff hunters and go hunt for buffs.

I agree with all of that; one thing I wanted to note is that it also depends on the timing of the attack on your field.

Ex. Tonight in MA Bish were trying to get peninsula back for hours and hours.  We (Rooks) kept defending...some of us were low hunting for goons alot.  I usually fly a zeke because I love turning, and I just put 50% in and patrolled the ocean.

Why it works:

Zeke (or whatever) under 100ft accomplishes two things; most higher nme's won't see you (and if they do, they are stingy with thier alt) AND you can see that big black dot of a goon on the horizon from 10miles away easy.  Get any higher and it isn't so easy to see.  You kill the goon, you win.  They bring more, you kill more (I killed four tonight and assisted on two).  Patrolling keeps them off guard because they don't expect you to be far from the field, but I always ask myself which route I would choose for a goon if I were the driver, then I go that route or crossways if checking for several fields, about 8k off the fields.

To sum it up, when a raid comes in, if I don't have a fight right in front of me, I go goon hunting everytime.

Good luck :D
