Sloppy Saitek Cyborg problem..
« on: May 18, 2002, 04:42:47 AM »
Hi!

Having bought a Cyborg USB Gold, and overcome my initial problems with the DREADFUL handle (adjustable to any level of discomfort you prefer!) I found to my disgust that the damned thing went sloppy on me just a few weeks after buying. Granted, somehow it's a kind of sloppiness that is more manageable than I used to get on Logitech Wingman sticks (stopped buying them due to very poor quality control; some of those were sloppy fresy from the box, whilst others could last 6 months before going sloppy), but it's Not Good anyway - makes ven flying bombers a tad trickier than it would otherwise be, and makes effective use of fighters very difficult indeed.

Can't be bothered to return it under warranty, which would in any case leave me without a stick at all for a while.

So my question is this - have any of you disassembled a Cyborg in order to fiddle with things to try to compress the spring at the base of the stick a bit more? If so, is there anything I need to be careful of, and what did you use to "tighten up" your stick?. (Please bear in mind that I fiddle with things mechanical and electrical only when I really have to; I'm not scared to, but I'm not vastly experienced at doing so, either. I need the simple version of the explanation... :-} )

Wish the stick was of similar quality to the base  - in fact, if we could just combine a Wingman stick with a Cyborg base and have GOOD  QC on the lot, I'd be a happy bunny... :-}

Go into the JOYSTICK area of SETUP within the game.
Under axis select PITCH. Note where your DAMPING slider is set. Move it up 10%. By doing so you'll reduce your nose bounce. I have my damping set to 40%

Also under PITCH AXIS, look at your scale sliders. Make a note of where they are set. Start aound 50% and move up incrementally  till your 100% half way across. This will reduce the joystick input for pitch.

I have my ROLL AXIS  set to 100% across the board.

As for adjusting the base spring of the Cyborg...never tried it. Not sure you can but you might ask around at:

Dmax, this is NOT a calibration problem; I'm familiar with that stuff. I'm not 100% sure if its entirely the spring not being as stiff as it used to be, or if the potentiometers in the base (assuming thats how it works) have gone downhill, but after being pretty damned good to start with, the joystick went very sloppy very quickly.

The weird thing is the comparison with the Logitech Wingman sticks Ive had. When they went sloppy, the worst thing was the yaw control, it was as if your plane was balanced on a knife-edge and could only fly banked one way or the other, unless you were on autopilot.  Moving the joystick would do nothing for a bit, then suddenly a little more movement would flip the plane to banking the other way, with nothing in between.

With this Cyborg, its not quite so dramatic, and it's almost as if the amount of control is both decreased and lagging. Whereas with a sloppy Wingman there wasnt much you coud do with it, with teh Cyborg, I can anticipate what is going to happen and so get the result I want - there isnt a catastrophic switch from one side to the other-  but its still a bit of a balncing act.

Will look at simhq later, thanks!
