actually the XP-47J and the XP-72 were 43 and 44 AC, that never made operational status due to various reasons. Mostly  USAAF descision to press on   with more production of the dependable P-47D.

Then again, a prop plane will never ever be able to catch a Jet in a dive unless the Jet has got lots less E from teh beginning, prop of teh prop plane hinders it from reaching speeds that jets can.

Actually Wilbus, the F4U-4 can compete with the 262 in a dive. -4 is one of the fastest prop planes ever designed. Along with that P47 and that F8F Bearcat.

Nice story and a chart about tests with P-47 with supersonic prop.

edit: Me-262 could run 950-1000kmh (590-620mph) in a shallow 20-30 degree dive. You're not going to catch it in any prop-plane.

edit II: Russian turbo-prop bomber Tupolev Tu-95 is capable to run 915kmh (570mph) @25k ft. I believe it's still fastest prop-plane in the world.

Hellcat, no plane with a prop can dive with a Jet plane, once you reach high mach speeds, around mach 0.9-0.95 (different for different planes and props) the prop serves as an Airbrake rather then a puller. That's the reason Jets (and civilian gliders compared to civilian prop planes) accelerate as if the devil was on their 6, and there is nothing that prevents them from going supersonic except for structural limits.
Doens't matter if a plane is fast or not, as long as it's go a prop, the prop serves as an airbrake like Staga said.

But yes, The F4u-4 was very very fast but can't compete with any jet.

No matter how super beefed up Jug/F4U/P51/Tempest/Spit/Hellcat/Bearcat/Ubercat gets, it still cannot compete with a serial production 262. Not to mention, if you go by prototype introduction dates, 262 is a 1942 plane ;).

Now, what about highspeed low drag canopies for the 262 ? How about R4Ms ? BK75s ? RATO take off units (what was it to 30k again, don't remember) ? Bombs ? DTs ?

262 is THE plane ;)
