Hellcat, no plane with a prop can dive with a Jet plane, once you reach high mach speeds, around mach 0.9-0.95 (different for different planes and props) the prop serves as an Airbrake rather then a puller. That's the reason Jets (and civilian gliders compared to civilian prop planes) accelerate as if the devil was on their 6, and there is nothing that prevents them from going supersonic except for structural limits.
Doens't matter if a plane is fast or not, as long as it's go a prop, the prop serves as an airbrake like Staga said.
But yes, The F4u-4 was very very fast but can't compete with any jet.
