I've been to cons, us flight simmers are easily as subject to ridicule as anyone else, trust me!  Look at the photo above, that's proof positive!

That some of them would restort to violence against another online player of a different ilk is just sad....

You know man...you are the only one who has thought that this was "disturbing"...and I've told that story to alot of people.  Most of them cringe at the thought of someone actually dressing themselves up and going out in public "pretending" to be invisible and ALL of them howled with laughter when it came to the "Oh, sorry..didn't see ya" part.

I still do whenever I think about it.

If the poor vapmire had been hurt then maybe the story wouldn't be so funny....but there was no indication that was the case when it was told to me.

People did think we (AH Con goers) were geeks for the most part.  One group, chatting in the elevator amongst themselves said "Did you see those nerds in that room with all the computers?"  Mox, one of my squaddies turned to them and with a straight face said "We're not nerds...we're pilots!"They apologised to him in an awed tone.

I won't say I didn't find it amusing at first.  The whole thought of being "invisible" made me smirk, and there was a bit of a punchline, but then I thought about the situation from the other person's point of view.

In his shoes (I'm assuming he's male) the incident might well be the low point of his own con.  Here he is amongst a group of his virtual "friends" doing his "thing" and then two guys come down the hall and drop him for no good reason.  You're right, it's hilarious.    And then one of the AHers (not sure to whom you're referring, but I'll take it on your authority he's from AH) has the temerity to explain to the victim why he was assaulted.

How about if the situation were reversed and one of our fellow flight simmers was wearing a beanie hat with a propeller and a T-shirt saying "I've got your joystick right here!", thinking it was all good for a laugh, and then two guys dressed up in chain mail or whatever slam him into the wall for looking like such a dweeb?  Not so funny when it's one of our own kind, eh?

Violence is violence, no matter how you dress it up.  Stop  objectifying the guy because he's Goth, or a vampire, or whatever, and therefore "different."  Actually, you two are probably much more alike than you'd care to admit: he was an online gamer, just like you, caught up in his fantasty just as much as we are in ours.  And he was even one of the rare ones that actually shelled out his own cash to attend a convention.  Too bad it had to be soured by a couple of idiots.

Now what would have been funny (in a somewhat detached way), is if there had been an all-out brawl between a legion of dorky flight-simmers and a horde of dweeby Goth RPGers.   Not so funny if you're involved, but very amusing to the average viewer of the 6 o'clock news who doesn't know what the hell an online game is in the first place. ;)

I'm sorry I'm the only one that found your little tale disturbing.  I don't have some sort of agenda and normally don't tilt at windmills thinking everything is an "issue" or that everyone's oppressed and somehow victimized, but this one just didn't seem so amusing.  It's not three guys who have a friendship sharing an inside joke or having a romp with everyone around knowing its harmless as one gets picked on; instead it's two people attacking a total stranger for no reason other than he's different than they are.  And the reality is, they're damned similar.   Maybe no one else gave it any thought above the superficial;  I'll admit I found it funny on that level, too, for a moment.  And then I realized what actually happened, and it just plain sucks.

Cheers,
phaetn

Okay, fine...I'll consider myself "virtually" bottom-spanked by you.

Can I get a hug now?

"For the record, that was NOT an AH con. We're too busy blowing sheep up and getting drunk to bother with such Goth mortals."

True to that!

Curval:  BIG HUG!

:)

Sorry for hijacking the thread.  Impersonal violence always bothers me, for some reason.   Now let's go and shoot some stuff up online!  (yeah, I recognize the irony)

I don't want to spank your bottom, in actuality or virtually.  But do me a favour and pass me a sheep, will ya? That one over there looks shaved in just the way I like 'em!  :D

baaaaaa!

hmm.. I guess I wouldn't call being bumped into violence.

but then again I might start violence if it were other than accidental.

Oh Puuhhhleease....

Get a grip.

Its funny as hell.

You've never seen assault or violence, if you think a bump in a hallway equates to assault.

The tagline makes it.

If a nerd in goth drops a nerd in a propeller beanie, is there any testosteron there to make a sound?

Actually, if it was a friend of mine getting dropped,  I'd possibly throw down.....so what?   (Unless it was Rip who would just Kung-Fu grip-em' into submission)

First of all your "if a tree falls in the forest" anaolgy is probably the funnisest thing I have read on the boards.:D

Second of all, I have to admit that if someone did it to me or a friend, I would have react as well.

Third, let's take this to the O'Club...I already started a thread over there.

Right.  And I know I would, too.  I don't like to admit it, but there it is.  If some stranger dropped me, and then suggested it was because of the way I looked, I'd probably make some quip back about the way he looked, and then there'd be a stupid brew up, and hopefully I'd have friends to back me.  Senseless, really.

I have a very secure grip (too tight, maybe?).  ;)   I have seen violence, and more than I'd care to have done.  I've been and sent people to the hospital as a result of stupid fights.  It's not a boast, merely a statement of fact.  I wish it had been different.  I'm generally quite non-violent myself (sheesh, didn't you see how skinny I am?!?), but when you're young, and tempers flare, stupid things happen.  I'm glad those days are well behind me.

My point is that it wasn't an accidental bump in the hallway.  It was a deliberate action, and of enough force that it knocked the guy down:  "[...he put his shoulder down and] ploughed into the guy sending him into the corridor wall and onto the floor."  Then he leaned over and added an insult "justifying" his cause.

If that's not an assault, I don't know what is.  It was clearly done with malice -- there doesn't have to be injury or bodily harm for it to be an assault (or a person, even -- property can be assaulted) -- and it was clear that he had intent.  It was an unlawful attack, period.  Not the sort of thing worth going to the authorities over, but that doesn't make it any less wrong.

If it was all in innocence it would be funny.  At one level I still find it so.  But the real hang up for me is that this wasn't something done in the spirit of fun, but a totally unprovoked attack, so I just don't find it funny...  call me a pacificst or a wimp or whatever.  Forgive me for blowing it out of proportion, but I won't just shrug it off and say "ha ha, the loser deserved it."  He didn't.  In fact, it just plain stinks that that had to happen to him when he was there doing exactly what the AH guys were doing: enjoying the community of his peers from an online game.

Look, I'm just trying to keep busy with this sheep without anyone noticing.  But it turns out that I'm beginning to like this Goth guy I never met more and more while all the while deploring ever more  strongly the actions of the dolt that dropped him.  It gives con goers a bad rep...

Cheers,
phaetn

[Edit]
Whoopsie, I was composing this as you posted, Curval.  You're quite right, it should be in the O'Club.

you have valid points but this
Quote
an unlawful attack,

is taking it too far IMO.

yeah yeah, I know that by strict definition it is 'assault' but please...
punch is an assault but to knock someone down and (supposedly) he wasn't hurt..

Obviously it wasn't 'right' for the guy to knock him down but let's not blow it out of proportion.
People get offended too easily these days...
then pull guns, etc.

IMO get the hell out of the way if you don't wanna' be knocked down.
(I'd get out of the way of a big guy)
and
Play your games (AH, WB, vampire inviso) whatever..
but stay IN YOUR ROOM while you play.

oops me too.. o'club
I just keep thinking there are more AH pics when I open this thread!
