Fine brave men indeed, my grand father was one of umm but

sounds like too much "saving private ryan" or mohaa

If you look at the number of german forces they were facing it was a foregone conclusion that the invasion would succeed.

Now i know most will get their red white and blue boxers in a bunch but keep it in perspective.

Flame Away im ready for it.

The fact still remains that THIS is June 6th and thousands of men including CANADIANS not just Americans bravely waded ashore and took the first steps towards Berlin. So my boxers are just red and white.

When whatever day Stalingrad day is let us know and we shall acknowledge it.

alright I got me numbers wrong :)

wasn't trying to. How's this:
That fateful day, with it's losses, did ruin tens of thousands of lives

Is that better?

After a clip on the news showing the troops in Afghanistan, marching up a mountain side with what looked like 150lbs on their backs, I realized how taken for granted they are. How many think "It's their job". It's more than a job as I'm sure many if not most could make as much if not more in the private sector doing much less/easier.

You keep it in perspective Wotan. Put yourself into the boots of one of those 18-19 year old kids running up a beach NOT KNOWING HOW MANY GERMAN DEFENDERS were arrayed against them. They were doing it to free France and other countries in Europe from Nazi occupation. The fact that you think you have evidence that proves the Germans were hopelessly outnumbered is just so much irrelevent crap. Go take your revisionist roadkill somewhere else. This is a salute to the brave young men of the generation that shaped our world.

And BTW all:
"only 3000"   Seems to me the word "only" doesn't belong.

Look, it is extraordinarily important to remember these men, but it is also important to remember the facts.  There is little enough awareness of WWII among most people for us to get it wrong when we talk about it.  I'm not trying to start a flame war, Ripsnort, but I'm not going to let someone call me a Nazi.

AND - read my post.  I didn't say 'only'.  I said 'less than 3000'.

the term "hero" is so overused today as to almost be meaningless...but the men who faced near-certain death as they scrambled up  the beach that day have defined the term by example.

without being over melodramatic, they saved the world, literally.

I'm sorry Kratzer, I wasn't trying to imply that you said "only". I was just replying to the tenor of some other posts. You are correct of course, the facts are important. So is the honor we give those brave young men.

The fact is the its the blood of the Soviets that fueled the victory in Europe. Thats not revisionist but fact.
