I was just there Monday, and I salute everyone who served, has served, or will serve in any military power in the world today, no matter what country or government they're fighting for. They fight for freedom and liberation of their country, and that must be respected in it's own right, no matter WHT they're fighting for.
But I tell ya, when I was at Omaha beach, that was a very sombering experiece. I waded into the Channel to until the water was at my knees, turned and faced the shore, and almost broke. There's no greater feeling than standing where heros fell and walked, and I saluted the flags lining the monument just on the shore. That was indeed a rewarding experiece.
At the cemetary, I couldn't help myself. Even though no one in my family was killed or is at that cemetary, I found a random gravesite and saluted it. I did this for a few stone, and paid my repects at the small chapel there.
I don't get it...am I the only one of my generation that does this stuff? Am I the only American teenager who gets choked up over a strip of sand? Well, I feel as though I am. I wanted to go to Normandy on my trip for a reason...and I accomplished that goal. I saluted the fallen, paid my respects, and thanked those living.
As to the rest of you lot here turning this into a flame fest. Who gives a damn over figures or nationalities or whose dick is bigger. Rip started this thread to honor those who fell on D-Dayand during WWII, and y'all start a fight over figures. Get with it...and stop bickering. If I wanted to see fights, I woulda stood outside a pub tonight.
all verterans, fallen or not!!!
