The AKs spit into two groups: One group led by Nimitz encountered B17s at 25k.  The second group led by Wabbit encountered Sputniks.  Here is a screen shot.  We also have film.

Here are the Sputniks.

The buffs we were escorting were cruising at 25k--film viewer confirms.  I thought there was a 25k alt cap for buffs, but didn't see that on the events site or in any threads here.

There was a 25k alt limit on the B17s only, not the escorts.

The screenshot posted doesnt really confirm how high those buffs are, they dont look much over 25k to me but without seeing the film I cant say.  The escorts above are perfectly within the rules as there was no alt cap on escort fighters.

MAG-33, cruising at 24,500 feet and once over target area, met up with another large buff formation that was co-alt to us.

Allied orders were very explicit, NO BUFFS OVER 25k.

Judging by that screen shot, it appears the buffs are at least 3k lower than the pilot, and the dots above are escort.

If your screen shot was directly over the buffs, I'd bet you'd see a distance of "D1.0" which is 1000 yards, which is 3000 feet.

Confirmed. The screenshot shows the high-altitude horizon illusion.  Remember that AH only shows a limited patch of dirt, and that patch doesn't increase with altitude.  The horizon becomes where the sky goes to dark blue.  Note the climb indicator on your ride -- it's pegged at -4000 fpm.

My bad guys.  I just jumped into that film last night just long enough to snap the screen shot at the beginning of the film to show curly what I was talking about.  It sure looked like they were high at our alt.  I played it all the way to the end this morning and by the time I was passing through the formation it was near 25k.

Mea Culpa.

412th was at 24.9k

Now about you Nuclear Powered 190's that were traveling near Light Speed. Going from 1.8K to 300 in half a second. Hehehe some you guys looked like UFO's last night.

There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Re: 1.8k to 300 yard warps
This is what happens with AH gets saturated with planes.
Your AH FE tracks the position of every plane in the arena, but at a very coarse level of update detail (not to be confused with graphics LODs). -- that is it gets infrequent updates, and very approximate positions.
When you see a "Dot", you're seeing the vehicles at this level of detail.
Normally, when you get to within 4000 yards, AH switches levels of update detail.  we've all seen aircraft "warp" across this boundary.
Now what happens when there's a ton of planes around is that the FE has to pick the nearest 32 (or 48 or 64 -- I dunno) planes.  So it reduces the radius of that "update LOD Boundary".  Add to that the violent maneuvers, accel and decel of a dogfight, and you've got people warping from 1.8 to 300.  If the LOD bubble shrinks small enough, you'll have planes that fly by, shoot you down, and fly out of the bubble between coarse LOD updates.

Nasty, huh?
So when you're in a saturated situation like that, watch out for the guy d 2k behind you.

Whats going to happen to the MA when we launch a flight of 10 pilots with 3 bombers a piece in 1.10?

Is this going to make MA unplayable?

We try to shoot each other down on climbout to help lessen the strain.

Unfortunately we had no friendly fire incidents because we were mostly confused just trying to find our bombers.  I apologize for that.

As ripsnort said, I made a point to make sure that the orders said clearly that B-17's maximum altitude was 25K. The Bombers the 56th escorted were not over. And I asked all the bomber squad CO's what their current altitude was at one point deep into the frame and all reported being below 25K.

Rgr.  It was an illusion that they appeared higher than us as we approached and we were too busy to check our altimeter when we got to them.

My bad.
