Sneak attacks!
« on: June 10, 2002, 02:55:43 AM »
How do you guys like them?  Both Rooks and Knights have pulled some devastating sneaks on the Bishops - devastating in the sense that they disrupt all base capture operations in an attempt to recapture the lost base.

There are two times I become nervous in Aces High:  When I'm flying a 262 in a swarm of enemy B17s and when a deeply located friendly base icon starts flashing.

For me at least, sneak attacks and guarding against sneak attacks really add to the excitement.

Curly - I'm with you!  Pity the bardar and flashing alert makes them less probable.

Roger that, AKCurly - but does the enemy base start flashing on the map?

Yes it does. But that will be too late.

I think flashing base icons are a concessions to lookout's and the fact that once you are that close to the base someone is surely going to see you on the ground and call it in and put the base on alert. Until we have players willing to sit in the tower all day I think this is the fairest way to do it. Now all I need is my bomber mossie or the B25H we used to have in WB, stick the Wagner CD in and get down low and blow the weeds away :)

Except for the fact it takes TWO planes to grab a base in a sneak, one of those being a goon. Thats BS.

Yeah I'd like to see more targets needing destroying before a base can be captured, maybe even need the whole base destroyed before capture is possible or at least a good percentage of targets such as hangars and barracks.

Revvin,

I still think the flashing warning on the map is OTT. I did many sneak attacks on the dark side, and you have to zoom up at the field in order to gain an attacking trajectory on the ground targets. The zoom would take you to about 3000' - and you would become visible on radar. I think that is adequate. For that reason, my dark side sneak attacks would begin by taking out the radar. (OK, I would strafe the 40mm on the way in) Even if only one guy had seen you pop on the map, he could summon help. But with the flashing warning as it is in AH, the entire community is alerted, and far from equating to local lookouts, the flashing map is tantamount to a world broadcast.

And how much notice do you take of these flashing icons when online? I know most people have already deleted their 'base under attack' wav after the 'coolness' of it all had worn off and the pre-pubescent members stopped getting excited at Yankee's dulcet tones :)

If folks have deleted/changed the message in such a way as they are no longer warned that is their own fault and so they must not care that a new base is underattack which means they probably wouldnt up for defense even if they did know. The warning is there, it may not be the best notification but it's there.  :D

Only two if there is no opposition. There is plenty of time to up a fighter once your base starts flashing and stop a small raid. Two or three fighters can easily thwart an incoming force twice the size. Only have to kill the goon.

Erm that was my point Acid, it was in reply to Beet1e saying the flashing icon gives too much info and I was pointing out it does'nt really as most people ignore them :)

I like the sneak attacks... a true joy.  What I don't like is a single plane can get up and kill all the troops.
