Helping newbies in the main arena
« on: June 14, 2002, 02:35:10 AM »
I have been "flying" in aces high for around 3 weeks, the learning curve is quite steep in terms of the FM's and commands and it is rather difficult fighting and reading the manual at the same time. However, after around 10 days or so the vast majority of commands are remembered and well understood and the game really becomes enjoyable.

I have been lucky enough to have asked questions on common channel and mostly get them answered, this help from veterans is much appreciated.

But ................  some wise guys answer to every question is alt F4, whilst not falling for that one personally I am sure that some newbies do, not a great introduction to A/H in my opinion, remember I said in my opinion.

hehe anyone who doesn't know what alt-f4 does shouldn't be allowed on the 'net.

IMO, the best thing a new pilot can do is just to keep flying and testing the sim offline for several days before getting online.
Questions like "How to open bay doors?", "How to start the engine?" and so are a bit out of scope when flying online.

wipass,

It's just one of the things we have to accept with AH. The cameraderie that we both knew on the other side does not quite exist here, at least not in the same form.

A good read of that helper application will pre-empt smartarses online.

See you at Shepherd Tavern on the 24th. We can talk about all this and laser gunnery then.

Ya know, Shane, some of us oldies weren't  born already knowing things like this.  We actually had to learn them.

Oh, Wipass,

Yah it is sad isn't it.

We'll here's a tip for you from a vet.

Don't forget to press enter three times to engage your Retarding chute on landing when flying a ME262.

Them things come in fast, so you'll need to use it to slow down, otherwise you'll crash into the end of the runway.

hope that helps...

See you in the air!

Perhaps we've had wildly differing experiences or rose tinted glasses are to blame but my first few months in Warbirds were a very lonely affair. Asking for help often met without any kind of reply and new guys were just cannon fodder for the more experienced. I know your own transition into AH was perhaps a little rougher than mine but was not helped by a lot of your comments about AH over at AGW before trying it. My first forray into AH was met with a warm welcome on the boards and online. I still seem to get plenty of six calls and far more people willing to escort my bomber. Skyman, Nexx and the other guys at 56 Squadron RAF have been very helpful online and scrambled numerous times to escort me home out of trouble ( to you guys) something I very rarely saw in Warbirds.

Hey Wipass glad to see ya here :)

This board and the Main arena have a rhythm just a little "different" than the other place.

Channel 1 cracks me up. And you'll find the VAST majority of people will help in any way they can.

It's comfortable :)

Learned a new word here..

"tard"

Like it..

It just sort of rolls off the tongue....

You can just drop it in anywhere in a sentence.. and it gives the statement bite.

I usually link it with "friggin" for that extra punch :)

So not only is it alot of fun here, it's expanded my vocabulary :D

Thanks for comments guys,

beet1e :) see ya shepherds tavern,

As I said in my post, personally I have found the questions asked by myself answered truthfully (ahem) and helpful, in fact revvin paged me privately and just said "ask away", thanks  :)

But I can't help feeling (IMO) that we could all help the newbies (me) along just a tiny bit more.   nopoop , you aint kidding ;)

karnak, we are on the same track, thanks.

and to all of you that have shot me down, you cheating, warping, stick stirring modem pulling "friggin tards"  ;)
