The real question is this : whay are American footballers so scared that they have to wear enourmous amounts of padding and a helmet while playing their version of the game?

Put a proffesional rugby union or league team against a gridiron team in a game of gridiron....you'll still get a game, no doubt with the Americans coming out as winners.

put a proffessional gridiron team in a game of union or league against a proffessional side....and you will have MANY casualties, virtually all of them in the first 10 minutes, and nearly all Gridiron players.

American football is a great game, but c'mon guys....whats with all the mamby pamby fairey pads and helmet?? your not scared of a bit of contact sport are ya? :)

P.S. my home town has clubs for all three above mentioned codes....I've played amatuer club level in all three.....gridiron is by FAR the least likely to involve injury in my experience.
Then League, then Union....that game is just an excuse for brutality on a weekly basis :)
Played club level soccer too, but only untill I discovered that physical size was much more of an advantage when you actually get to grind the other bloke into the dirt without being sent off :)

I always thought the US didn't like football because you can't put enough commercial breaks into it. You need a sport where you can stop for a couple of minutes while they change teams or have a time out or something every 15 minutes or so to be able to go "and now a word from our sponsors...". The whole two-halves of 45 minutes stuff is really not TV sponsor friendly, and I suspect the TV stations assume it's a bit committed for the audience, whom US TV stations seem to treat like they all have ADD or something. :D
Aussie rules (from what little I seen of it) is fighting with intermittent patches of rugby. They even do slow motion replays of the fights. All in all quite good fun. :D

I cant belive some of the comments on this board, Some football matches are VERY boring but a majority(sp) are exciting, Now American Football that is boring my run down;
Kick the Ball other team catch it 5 people from original team pound the one with the ball to the ground,Stop,Ad break,Throw the ball,Knock more people down,Stop,Ad Break and so on for about 4 hours.

Oh And BTW why do you call it 'Football' when you kick the ball very rarely and then change the name of Football to 'Soccer'?;)

I think soccer should be played on a smaller field, with smaller goals and no goaly.

Nevermind, we already have basketball, the greatest sport in the world. :cool:
