XP Microphone Weak Volume
« on: June 20, 2002, 05:33:25 PM »
Anybody else having trouble with their microphone volume on Windows XP?  My labtec mike worked fine with Aces High on Win98, but it is barely audible on WinXP.

I've been fussing with all the sound settings, and researched this thread, but still don't see any answers.

What am I missing (literally)?

In the volume control window look for "Advanced Settings" in the "Options" menu.  Select that and it will put an "Advanced" button under your mic volume.  Click on the "Advanced" button and select "Mic Boost".

Sounds promising, but both my Audio and Voice Recording has the Advanced button grayed out.

Is XP not recognizing I have a microphone?  The mike is in the microphone slot, and the audio system test shows everything working.

The mike works, but is very faint.  Your mike boost suggestion sounds great, but can't get to it with the grayed out buttons.

I'm not sure what the window looks like in XP, but in 2k you have to go under Options and select Advanced Controls to make those buttons not greyed out.

In XP u just need to select Sounds and audio devices from the control panel.
Click advanced under Device Volume
Click Options, click Advanced controls
click properties
click the recording option thing click ok

Then under the mic volume column you should now see an Advanced option.  Make sure the select check box is checked

This is how it works for me with an SBLive and XP Pro

Thanks very much, Funkedup and Skurj, for your help.  Unfortunately, my audio and mike input advanced controls remain grayed out no matter how I approach them.

Apparently my sound is not as configurable as the SoundBlaster cards.  I have 6-channel audio on my Dragon Ultra Soyo motherboard, and no audio software other than XP.

Maybe the microphone boost got overlooked in all the 6-channel heroics?  For the time being it's another computer mystery that hopefully will someday serendipitously yield a solution.

Meanwhile, volume is fine when I hold the lapel mike two inches from my mouth.  So my choices are (1) fly one-handed, (2) clamp the mike on my collar and shout, or (3) fly and not talk.  Much like the typing alternatives while flying.

Okay, sigh, at last I found the microphone boost.  It was not in Windows XP (which had it grayed out), but in a PCI Audio Applications folder for the soundboard integrated on the motherboard.

Thanks for your assistance.  I should have scoured the programs list more thoroughly, but it seemed like something the XP controls would handle.
