I didn't want to discuss settings for an alternate arena in the other thread.  The idea is that the Main Arena needs to stay the same for the sake of beginners and vets who like those settings.  So keep the main but add an alternate arena to try out some new ideas and more historically oriented settings.

Here are the kind of things I'd like to see:

-No radar display except in tower or in aircraft which had radar.

-Text or voice based GCI in flight.  Automated system which gives you direction, distance, and height estimate to nearest bandit which is on friendly radar.  User can also specify a sector for the controller to search.

e.g.

"User:  .gci
System:  Bandit 15 miles, 200 degrees, 15,000 feet."

or

"User:  .gci 9,5
System:  Nearest bandit in 9,5 sector 72 miles, 33 degrees, 3,000 feet."

-Airfields/vehicle bases/strategic targets give automated raid warning when enemy units enter visual range.  E.g. "System:  V22 is under attack!"

-1:1 Fuel multiplier.

-Enemy icons for type only.  Friendly icons for handle only.  Icon distances per the  scenario settings.

-Retain 3-country setup.

-Each country can fly planes of all nationalities.

-Rolling Plane Set.  Each day of the tour represents two months of the war.  Planes are enabled on the day which corresponds to the month of the war in which they entered service in a combat theater.

-Rare Unit Perks.  Perk values are not based on quality, but on quantity.  Planes/vehicles which were introduced very late in the war or saw little/no combat (F4U-1C, Ta 152, Ostwind) are heavily perked to make them rare in the arena.

- Turn off any "crutches" in the physics modeling.  HTC have done a great job on the physics, but they have added a few things to lower player frustation levels.  E.g. automatic WEP shutoff on planes other than P-47, auto-brakes that prevent plane from nosing over, combat trim, etc.

That's all I can think of for now.            :)

how bout adding the transparent icons such as those utilized in WWIIOL. No Dist. markers, just more opaque the closer the con becomes. When the con is out of (real life) visual ID range, the icon would be transparent.

I'm not married to all the details on my list - I'm just trying to give the general idea of what I'm talking about.  Mostly it's a place for HTC to be innovative with the arena setup without alienating the "same-old same-old" crowd.

Awhile back i created a PAC map. A few squadies and others were fighting in it and we had a blast.
ICONS off, Axis vs Allied planes. Killshooter ON, Collisions ON. Talk about sweaty palms!!!!!

HO's were NON existant, for fear of a freindly kill. One thing that DID bother me is Identifying the plane, Because of the size, you really didn't register what plane it was till after the merge. IF the visual plane shape was a tad bigger, it would be PERFECT. Thats my take.

Or maybe just a small icon that pops in at d.2 with just plane type NO range.

I could definately open a H2h map set to these perameters, if anyone wants a preveiw of what you are asking for, To see if it is REALLY what you want.

Funked, that's an oustanding outline.  I've always hated the idea of a rolling planeset, but regardless, I'd take your idea in an arena the way it is and probably love it.  You've listed all the things that can add some fun to guys that have been around for a while, and stayed away from the "let's make it hard and boring just for the sake of making it hard" direction.

great list funkedup, i agree 100% except i think we need more planes before a RPS is viable. think like the apache, p40, ki-44, and many others would need to be added first.

but the other stuff could, and should be implimented right away. it'd be very nice.

Zig I think the planeset we have now - a lot of planes that didn't fight until 1944 or later - is a result of the free-for-all arena.  If we had an RPS, guys would be asking for more early war planes.  It's a chicken and egg thing.

NUTTZ!  I would LOVE to get a H2H game set up like that!  If you and your squaddies do it again, give me a holler =]

skernsk - i dont think the range thing is as important as you think. i have been playing wwii online a bit lately and think they have range off there. it's kinda cool.

they have a ring that gets darker as the plane gets closer but i dont even think that is necessary. in fact it kinda gets in the way - just use your gunsight it is surprisingly intuitive.
