I keep going long.

Q: If I calibrate the site on a high bit of ground......and the target is lower......does this make any difference to the drop?

As long as I click the target on clipboard then it'll drop ok, right? Or should I be trying to calibrate the site on a bit of ground the same alt as the target?

You have to calibrate the bomb sight to for the altitude of the actual target. It puts the crosshairs too far back and you tend to drop for the shorter flight time of the bombs.

I have noticed this:

1. If droping uphill (calibration point is below target), bombs drop long (past target)
2. If droping downhill (calibration point is above target), bombs drop short (before target)

Two solutions:

A. Compensate by droping early for #1 or late for #2.
B. Pan your bombsite ahead far enough to use the acutal target as your calibration point.

I have found that I like Solution B better than A, but both work!

Also, be carefull about damage to airplanes. If the formation is drifting right because of engine out or other damage, the bombs will fall to the right of the target. Good luck, hope that helps.

Just to play Devils advocate on this.....

In my experience it makes no difference what part of the ground you use to target your sight with the cross hairs, (Straight down, left, right etc) all you are doing is calibrating your forward speed against the ground. The important bit is making sure you click on the clipboard in the correct place (Thats what sets your alt). Of course adjusting either speed or alt after doing this will cause your bombs to drop short or long. I do find it is important to make sure the map is fully zoomed in when I click on the target though.

Possibly you have not let the speed stablise it can take quite a time for the bombers to reach a constant speed if it was still slowing down or accelerating that would cause the bombs to drop short or long, Just a thought

The point you mark doesnt matter, as long as it begins lined up with your flight path (Either where you starty when you go into calibration, or directly "Up" from it) If you pick a point off to the side, it won't come out right. Altitude doesnt matter at all. All marking does is calculate your speed.

1-2mph and 4-5 feet of altitude off though after you calibrate, and you can miss by a hundred yards.

Managed to hit twice last night, what I did was to calibrate Twice, once at long range, then once again right a minute before Drop... might be luck though, need more practice

I always calibrate my bombsight using one of the target buildings as mark. If you look almost straight ahead when in calibration mode, you can actually use the bombsight to locate the target with, and change heading accordingly.

You should always calibrate as late as possible on the bombrun.

Additional experience has proven to me that what I said above is totally crap.

I have noticed that I do tend to drop long more often than I drop short however. I am not sure why. I have discovered that bomb dispersion accounts for a much greater % of my misses than poor calibration does. In the training arena you can see how close your calibration is to the old "lazer guided" bombsite, and even when I drop on a perfect calibration, I will miss more times than I hit. I have resigned myself to the fact that a salvo of 3 for 1000lb bombs and a Delay of .70 is the closest thing I can do to get 100% accuracy even after a perfect calibration. With more practice, maybe I can make this a salvo of 2. (Salvo 6, Delay .3 works just as good with 500lb bombs.)
