Well, when I've jumped I've used ropes. Dynamic ropes, wich allow to extend and contract, yes, not static ones...but ropes.

Those ropes won't stretch a bit after use (may do a couple of centimeters ,but never more), can stand several thousand lbs of tension and they only get weaker after thousands of uses.

If a rope doesn't comply with those points, is not usable for "puenting" (in fact, we directly dismiss it as unusable for any risky use). And if one of those ropes breaks or does something weird, there is a place for a sue, because they are guaranteed to be secure under those limits.

Maybe there you use a different material than here, or is simply that we are talking about different practices. :)

folks:
Elfenwolf is in the hospital after something nasty happened involving bungee cords.  That much we have on fairly good authority.  Let's just wish him well, and save the speculation and razzing for when he himself can tell us what happened.

And, yeah, bungee accidents do happen, even to professionals (anyone remember the fatal bungee incident in a rehearsal for a superbowl halftime show?)

Yikes, I hate to hear this.  Find out where we can send him a card.  I'll mail him a mushy one and sign it as Ripsnort.

As I told him before, when you troll as much as he, its like crying wolf...I don't believe it til I see pics with dates on it.

Anyway, I think this was Elfenwolf:

Quote
13 July 1997, Virginia) Eric A. Barcia, a 22-year-old Reston, VA resident, was found dead yesterday after he used bungee cords to jump off a 70-foot railroad trestle, police said.

The fast food worker taped a number of bungee cords together and strapped one end around his foot. Barcia had the foresight to anchor the other end to the trestle at Lake Accotink Park, and he even remembered to measure the length of the bungee cords to make sure that they were a few feet short of the 70 foot drop. He proceeded to fall headfirst from the trestle, and hit the pavement 70 feet below several seconds later.

Fairfax County police said "The stretched length of the cord that he had assembled was greater than the distance between the trestle and the ground." Perhaps the deceased fast food worker should have stuck to the line, "Do you want fries with that?"

Fellas,
Elfen is an old squaddie of mine. Another one of my old buddies was able to get ahold of his wife and he is going to be ok.
Apparently the problem came from his being to vein to tell the bungie operator his true weight. If you know him like I do then it makes perfect sense.

Umm....clarify?  I mean, I dunno how bright the bungee operators are, but if you weigh 300 and say you are 170...perhaps they kinda nod in quiet agreement..and set the sucker up for 350?

Hope he's alright, he's got the same kinda dog as me  ;)  We've shared some neat posts comparing what our dogs have in common, traits, etc.  I haven't seen the troll some of you guys mention.

Heal fast, Elfen
